Yep, he was upset...Such is life.

The old Pentax K2 and K2DMD don’t seem to get a lot of love. This seems strange to me as it was the flagship of the K series line up. Yet the K1000 has achieved legendary status and survived for decades with what has to be the most Spartan set of features possible. I know that makes it appealing to photography classes but wouldn’t you be better off with a KX or better still an MX film camera? [ ] Are there any other K2 fans out there?
I loved the K2 I had at one time, and I have ~NEVER~ enjoyed using a K1000, so I'd have to agree with you.

But, I'd have to disagree a bit with your "better off with a KX or better still an MX" statement - I preferred the KX to the MX.

K2dmd

FWIW, having never owned one, I succumbed and have a K2DMD on the way.

Pic's when it gets here!

Fwcetus,

As you have owned and used both I'll bow to your opinion on this one. Still like my MX though.

Wow. I saw one in mint condition a while back, in fact, it was more like NOS.

The best feature? Split-image focusing screen - although the viewfinder internal blinds are pretty cool.

I sought out and bought a K1000 for myself. here's a few reasons why:

1. Fully manual. The K1000 has a serious reputation as the perfect learning camera. As I wanted one in order to learn photography, rather than take pretty pictures without having to think, it seemed like the obvious choice. The fact that it does next to no hand-holding is a big plus.

2. Reliability. K1000s also seem to have a reputation for extreme reliability, due to their horizontal-travel fabric shutters and the fact that there's just not much in them to break.

The reputation of the camera in everything I read pointed to the fact that it had these 2 things going for it. Add to that I could use my dad's ME Super lenses, and could get a Pentax DSLR later on and keep using the same lenses, I was sold

Now, once I get better with photography and don't need the K1000 to teach me anymore, I may seek out a K2 or even a later-model AF film body to go in my bag with my K10D.

K2 came with either 50/1.2 or 50/1.4 kit lens

One of my Pentax guide books backs up the comment about the K2 being packaged with the 50/1.2 when new.
According to the K2 brochure and the 10x15 4-color feature sheet that came with the K2DMD I just got, kit lens was the buyer's choice for the 50/1.4 or 50/1.2. The regular K2 user manual also listed the 55/1.8 as a choice. The large K2DMD feature sheet was a supplement - teh camera came with a regular K2 manual.

The KX I got in 1977 came with the 50/1.4 standard.

Don’t forget the good old K55/1.8. When I bought my KX new I ordered a K55/1.8, as it was the cheapest prime option at that time.

I am glad I learned using K1000 and developed skills and habits I routinely use with modern DSLRs, often much faster and getting better results then photographers who started with automatic cameras still using all bells and whistles at full power.
you said it all... the K1000 make you more creative, it forces you to think of the image you want to get , meaning at the end you get better pictures .

sure if you already know photography get a better camera

I took this picture on the first day I got my k1000 and it is one of the first pictures I ever took with an SLR .

no way i would think of taking this picture the way I did with a different camera with the knowledge I had at the time

Plenty of 'better' cars at the time, but not cheap and simple basic transportation.
hmm, I own a VW and a K1000...

Actually, I received a K2 body yesterday evening in a box of old Pentax goodies that were given to me by an old retired photographer that saw me with my K1000 while at a car meet last Sunday with my bug. He was almost teary eyed when he was telling me how long it had been since he had seen anyone actually using one. I played with it a little last night, but so far still prefer the K1000 - probably just a familiarity thing.

And to you people that mentioned durability, HECK YEAH! I lost my footing and slid down a steep gully in the desert a few weeks ago with the K1000 (the $19 K1000) in my hands at the time. I mean really steep - and full of boulders the size of my car. When I finally regained my footing (meaning when I hit the bottom) - Torn pack, broken plastic water bottle, cracked screen on cell phone in my pocket, lots of scrapes and bruises, one scrambling shoe still near the top, broken tripod, and the bottom ripped open on my cargo shorts (good thing I was wearing boxers and not something "sexy"). I dug out the K1000 which had also made it to the bottom along with the wash of gravel and rocks, blew it off, took the scratched the UV filter off and it was all good.
