I loved my visit to South Africa. The county is unlike any other, the people are friendly and the Cape Town landscape is just as breathtaking as Rio.

Folks, sorry for missing the double-post of the firetruck shot. The forum has a bug which results in (or allows) unintentional double-posting from Android Firefox on my Nexus 7 (haven't seen it in any other Android browsers but then I seldom use any others). I set up the post, hit the submit button *once* and whoopee there's two. Usually I spot the 'extra' immediately but in this case it was spread over a page break. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

More Cinestill

I sure love this film. Makes everything gritty and grainy and sour and lonely.

Careful when rewinding it during the winter though. I shot a roll the other week, and wound up with almost every frame covered with electrostatic discharge due to rewinding it too quickly in the dry weather.

What does that do to the image?

I'll post something once I finish going through the scans, but basically: red lightning-like or web-like patterns on the film. They can range from fairly minor to fairly dense and/or large. (Occasionally blue instead of red, but red seems to be more common.)

Edit: Actually, now that I think of it, I had some fainter ones on the 120 CineStill Alpha when I tried it out. You can see it on the bowl and around the MasterCard sign.

Thanks for the heads up. I got some weird light things happening on some of the frames but nothing like that. Cinestill is great but it's kind of finicky.

Yep. It's a neat film, but the removal of the remjet to allow for C41 processing leaves it a bit more temperamental than other emulsions.

This is what they had to say about it on their Flickr group a while back, just for anyone who's curious:

Watch out for this when rewinding your film too fast especially in cool dry climates. These sort of exposure marks will usually show up as either blue marks (if damage or sparks occur on the emulsion side) or red marks (if some damage or sparks occur on the acetate site of the film). This can happen with any film but due to CineStill's extreme sensitivity, it is more common on our films. Basically what is happening is a single layer is becoming exposed due to something other than light. That could be something physically touching the film hard enough to cause exposure or static discharging as a spark.

Just adds to its charm. I've noticed that my shots are often grainer than their sample shots. I just get mine processed at a local lab (the only one within 200km, not kidding) and that's probably why. I like the grain, though, adds to the effect I'm looking for.

Grain may be exacerbated by the scanner as noise. It's possible they used a better scanner than your lab for their samples, and/or de-noised the scans in pp. If you like 'grain', or you just want to amelioriate the stark appearance of blown highlights and blocked shadows, you can easily add noise in pp.
