When I shoot with slide film, because of its narrow exposure latitude, I have to take this into consideration when I evaluate a scene. You made the right move, exposing for the shadows. In that situation, you expose for the shadows and let the highlights fall where they may. Another important thing to remember about slide film, unlike print film, it will often hold an incredible amount of detail in the shadows and even quite dark areas. I have been able to pull out a surprising amount of detail from the shadows when post processing slide film. So even if you inadvertantly expose for the highlights, all need not be lost. Something else I like to do with unusually lit slide scenes is subject a single slide image to HDR processing. This often lets me pull detail out that otherwise wouldn't be recoverable.
