Originally posted by Jonathan Mac I hadn't realised the MZ-S only went to 1/6000s, I'd assumed it was 1/8000s like other flagship models. For a while I was on the lookout for an MZ-S but then I read that even this top-of-the-range model suffers the cheap plastic cog in the mirror mechanism and is prone to breaking.
I'm enjoying the two Z-1s I've bought in the last year, I just wish there was a grip to use them with AA batteries instead of expensive lithiums.
I got a cheap Z-1 with a remote trigger and such, but it’s jammed on me twice now. Just won’t advance the film anymore. I unloaded in the dark and reloaded. Worked perfectly for about half a year and then did it again. Same routine. So it’s not really a camera I can rely on. I have to say I enjoyed shooting on the MZ-S more. I bought one from someone on the forum but unfortunately it got stolen not long after..
About the cog: supposedly the models that start their serial with 4 and up are with a metal one. There’s a post somewhere on the forum about it. Asahi Photo in the UK does replacements when they break, but they use a nylon cog I heard.
I just bought an FA77 so I’m good for a while, but my Christmas gift to myself this year will be an MZ-S again :-)
