Jimfear, those are fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. Makes me really yearn for some Velvia of my own... I especially love the first shot; it's intimate and surreal at once.

Thanks! I have shot quite a bit of B&W lately but recently got home three rolls of Velvia from processing and it again reminded me why I call this my favourite film! It's fantastic, but can be hard to scan.

First shots with K1000

I've recently gotten back into SLR photography from PnS. Picked up both a K1000 and SuperProgram and various lenses that came with them. These are some of my first shots on the K1000, so back to manual everything! I was fairly pleased with the results as my K1000 only has the microprism, no split screen like I had on the KR-5 I used back in the 80's.

Film was 200ISO Fuji
Lenses used:
Takumar-A 70-200mm f1:4 zoom w/macro
Goose - handheld, 1/500, f8 IIRC
Sunrise - tripod-stabilized, don't remember settings

SMC-A 50mm f1:2 in combo with ProSpec 2x TC or close-up lenses +2, +4
Flower and Moth - with the TC, tripod, didn't note the settings
Marigold - mini tripod and closeup lenses I think at a +6

The scans don't do them very good justice. What do most folks do to get film shots into the computer? I have an HP Photosmart C5550 All-in-one which has a flatbead scanner.

Hey, welcome aboard! Good shots too.

Re. scanning - for 35mm color I have the drugstore minilab do the scans, they usually are decent enough and around 1500pix wide. If I need something bigger or special, I use a dedicated flatbead, the Epson 4490. Looks like you need to do some spotting and some curves/levels adjustments on some - I usually have to - as keep in mind the scanner/software implements a very generic auto exposure/auto levels algorithm for the scans.

Ilford Delta 100, Ilfosol-S, Epson 4490, SMC-A 2.8/75mm, Pentax 645, AF280T ttl bounce off the ceiling.

I was reading some of the forum posts on scanning which mentioned scanning the negatives or positives in the case of slides. Would this be done like a contact sheet by laying them across the scanner surface and then cropping the individual cels out and reversing in PSP or Photoshop? Seem like a scan of such a small image then blown up would result in lower quality to me, but I'm just getting back into a more serious take on my photography.

As per the spotting, I noticed that too, but it didn't appear until after resizing the scanned images to upload. Perhaps I'm not resizing correctly or efficiently? I scanned at 1200dpi and the original file sizes ranged from 10.5MB to 20.6MB as jpgs (tried one as a TIFF and it was over 100MB!). Obviously going from such a large size to a 50kb upload seems wrong to me, but not sure what I'm doing wrong. These were from matte finish 4x6 prints.

Intentionally didn't do any levels/curves adjustments as it was late and I wanted to get feedback on the "raw" photos with no adjustments than what I could do in-camera (and with a K1000 it ain't much )

Thanks for the input,

John

Under the waterline & other abstracts

Under the waterline

Lifeline

Sailor knots

MZ-S, Portra 400NC and one of the FA Limited.
There are always jumble to go through when on a beach where people have been working like lumber salvage in this case.

Goes to show, it's not always the camera and lens, sometimes it's the camera and lens  This with a Sakar FF-8, a plastic camera that advertises its "Optical Lens" "focus free" 35mm, and which sports a curved film plane.

due to the quality of the lens, it tends to achieve a form of 3-d, if 3-d was in agar agar or perhaps a bucket of slop.

However, I turn your attention to the amazing portion of this photograph, the French Vintage Advertising Poster Face in the Pavement:

the solution is: chancing my local photo studio :P

here's one of my new shots. Pentax K1000 + Ilford XP2 Super
Fantastic BW portrait! Like the grain, the framing, the boy (brother?) in the OOF, the eye-contact.
