And arguably, medium format film is (was, and only past tense because of the price plummets due to digital) for professionals. Many of the $500-$1,500 medium format kits out there were over $10,000 new. I have the 31 and 77 and they're fantastic lenses. Some of the best pictures I have of my children were exposed through those lenses. They work on manual and AF film and digital bodies. And now that Pentax has a full frame camera, try using those expensive DA* lenses on that body.
I know those MF kits were very expensive back then, I couldn't afford them, now I can. And I can use those lenses on my 645D as well, that I could afford many years after release. And that's what make those lenses even more expensive, they haven't drop in price. But yeah, it must be because you can still use them on digital cameras, and they're AF.
I supposed they're pretty good lenses, but I just can't invest that kind of money on a format(35mm) that only use for snapshots, and not main personal or commercial work. I'm not knocking on the lenses or people that can afford them and buy them. Just perplexed they haven't drop in price that much, like much of the film gear. I bought a complete kit of RZ67 Pro II and a Mamiya 645 Pro TL, for the price of the 77mm each. I bought a Pentax 645D with 3 FA lenses(45, 75 and 200mm) for the price of both the 31 and 77mm limited lenses.
