hey guys. so i recently bought an MX from a forum member. its waiting for me at home (im currently in south korea for the next week). ive never shot film before (except little toy cameras i had as a child!) basically i am saying that i know nothing!!! so i really like this thread. some amazing shots for sure. the thing i noticed is that there seems to be as much talk about the films you used as the lens or body. i intend on shooting only B+W film. can someone suggest some of the best BW films for a begginer? i will taking a trip to el salvador in about two weeks so i dont have time to do research and find the best film for me. also if the film is somewhat rare will i be able to buy it in the local pharmacy or drug store? if i want a decent film do i have to go to a dedicated camera shop?

please help! i know you can!!!!

hello all. I'm new here, I've been poking around this site for the last few months in various areas of the forums. I've been teaching myself how to shoot the last couple years and I've been using a k1000 primarily with two lenses: a Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 and a Vivitar 100mm Macro f/3.5. I have my film processed at the local lab and I scan my negatives and slides on an Epson 4490 scanner. I do minimal editing in photoshop, if any, on most of my stuff. I love film photography and as long as my local lab is around, I'm going to keep shooting it. Here are a couple on different types of film.

B&W film for a beginner? If you're not up to diving right into doing your own developing, or into paying someone to develop your 'real' b&w film for you, there are essentially two choices: the chromogenic films from Kodak (BW400CN) and Ilford (XP2 Super). These are both ISO 400 films that are developed in C-41 chemistry, the same as color print film, so any minilab can do it for you at low cost. I see the Kodak every now and then at some drug stores, but basically you need a camera store for these. By the way, there's nothing wrong with buying whatever color film you find along the way - you can always convert the scans to b&w afterwards.

thank you all for the encouragement! I'm really enjoying it. here's a few more, the first few are with a Spotmatic I got off ebay as a last minute backup for a camping trip in July because my k1000 was sent in for CLA.

Kodak Ektar 100 in the Spotmatic with a Yashinon DS 50mm @ f22 on bulb for probably two or three hours. I had some issues the first time I tried a shot like this a couple summers ago. this is actually my third attempt, the last one there were no visible stars, but some strange effect from the moon (June of this year).

Thanks Fearview, I think I'm going to get it enlarged to 18x24 for my dormroom. Since this is just a quick pic from my DSLR, the colors and sharpness are a little off, but I guess they look pretty decent Here's another one from the second batch of processing. This time much cleaner haha (I learned not to try and dry off the film with tissues)
