I've been working on my collection of tintypes lately. I've been copying them for a few years trying to get WB, and clarity perfect. Tried my K-01 with the kit 18 - 105 which has a pretty good macro capability, but even with focus peaking I still didn't get razor sharp copies. Now trying my Canon with a similar focal length lens. Since the pictures are valuable I want copies to be perfect.

I thought I might throw in my experience, and a difficult example of an old family photo (probably taken around 1920). Taken with a dedicated macro lens (Voigtlander Apo-Lanthar 125mm in my case, but any macro lens will do) on my K10D in Raw mode. One direct flash through a polarizing film on a separate tripod at almost right angle, and a polarizer filter at 90° on the lens. You have to fine-tune the angle of the polarizer with test shots until all reflections from the flash are cancelled. Then set white and black points and colour temperatute/tint in the raw converter and/or in PP. Works like a charm.

Oh, and I forgot: a glass plate to keep the photos flat. Compared the output to regular scans from an Epson flat-bed scanner: much better from the camera than from the scanner.

Thanks for the comments - it's actually not a picture I've ever seen (no hard copy in the box) so I was really happy to discover the negative.

wkraus, that turned out really well. I've had OK luck scanning old photos with my Epson, but they require a lot of white balance fiddling and retouching. At this rate I'll finish the box by the time I'm 70.

(As an aside - a lot of the photos I have are deteriorating, badly - it seems to be this one particular type of B&W photo, square, with a white border with deckled edges. The picture is wearing off in kind of a "brush stroke" pattern. It's really weird and I was wondering if maybe they were developed by brushing something onto the paper and it wasn't done properly or something. They are all from around 1958-1960 - dated on the edge.)

Nuff, those are both great and I especially like the framing of the ship on the first.

stepmac - I have used Costco for videotape transfer to DVD and it turned out great, but no experience on slides. Sorry....

Nice one, arnold. There's a house back there? I know people complain about the Kodak films (well, the Gold/ Color Plus) but I actually like the colors. They have a little bit of "unreality" that I think turns out nice, most of the time.

I like the composition on the alleyway John.

Hope you don't mind me sharing another old photo. I've been slowly scanning a box of old photographs and negatives that were my grandmother's. One problem is that there are a lot of weird-sized negatives that don't fit into my holder. This size however fit into one of them so I was able to scan it. It's my grandmother, I'm guessing around 1940. Camera unknown.

I find this type of photo 'look-back' fascinating. How young your grandmother looked. I came across a great aunt's scrap books with hundreds of pictures that I eventually photographed with the K5 and M1.7 lens. The books were falling apart. There is some interesting history here, but I only selected this group of photos to put on line, as there were far too many otherwise. Considering these were taken over a hundred years ago, they were brilliant. Have a look at this selection.

Limestone? I live near Smith Rocks (Oregon) and they have a similar textured volcanic tuff.

indeed very common in the south of france. I've looked for Smith Rock, and it seems to me that your limestone i maybe less compact and seem less ... crimps oriented
