We seem to be loosing bowling alleys frequently here in Vancouver to condo developments. Still have the Commodore lanes in downtown though, with the "club" upstairs.

Now that I'm viewing them on a proper desktop display I can see they are not 'blown to hell', just the pics are really high key (especially the first). Always hard to tell with different monitors. They don't look "really high key" or "a stop overexposed" on my Macbook Pro or 27" Thunderbolt Display. I could see them coming down some potentially but not a full stop. I kinda like 'em as is.

Average metering? The last one is the best (though I'd still say 1/2 stop over). You might get better results with a handheld meter. Another trick is to meter off the back of your hand, assuming skin tones are similar. Or bracket.

K1000, M28 f/2.8, Fujifilm X-TRA 400. Was trying to induce some lens flaring on the first one, but apparently the M28 didn't want to.

Anyone have any recommendations on good colour film? The Fuji is cheap, which is nice, but I'm not particularly fond of the colours.

A slightly overexposed look in portraiture is certainly nothing new or unwanted/unwarranted in some cases. He likes them.

I do as well - I personally prefer the 2nd shot by far as a whole - comp, exp, model's expression, background etc etc...

Based on what you just shot, my favs are Ektar100 and Velvia100F. I just gave a roll of X-Tra400 to my dad and he had the same conclusion about it.

It's quite easy to digitally manipulate color balance, saturation and contrast to your preference. Film characteristics which may be harder (though not necessarily impossible) to control/compensate for are dynamic range, accutance and grain. I find the fuji film is very flexible in nearly all respects, has tremendous dynamic range, and its grain is not excessive for chromogenic 400 film, when exposed at rated or slower speeds.

Of course it didn't flare, you're using a pentax lens!...try a hanimex.

Judging by his history of work, I'd say he gets quite good results. I'd personally be looking to get advice from Alan, not give it to him. Just MHO.
