Any general TLR tips and tricks from the brains trust here?

I've got a Minolta Autocord which should be arriving this week, first time playing with both medium format and TLRs

The Autocord is a great camera.
Be careful/gentle with the focus lever...
I make a habit of always setting shutter speed before winding.
Also, the Autocord cocks the shutter on the forward wind, so after you finish a roll and wind it up, the shutter will be cocked. I always fire the shutter after finishing a roll, just so it doesn't sit for awhile with the shutter cocked.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm aware of the issues with Autocord shutters, the one I'm getting had been refurbed so hopefully it won't be an issue.

Without a tripod, lower shutter speeds can be used than with an SLR because the camera (with neck strap) can be held steadily against your chest and there's no mirror shock. I imagine you'll be able to get down to shutter speeds along the lines of what you can manage with your rangefinder.

... a little self-timer self-port with my seemingly successfully repaired little Russian KMZ - it had a nice chunk missing from the trailing curtain which filled in with liquid e-tape. No leaks on this roll. And now.... to bed.

Yesterday I scanned the first roll through a Pentax compact - the 145M Super. It's a nice enough camera for a compact. The lens seems quite sharp, though has a little distortion, and it's slow (of course).

This was also my first time trying Lomography Colour Negative 400 film, which I only bought because Fuji Superia 400 is no longer available in 36-exposure rolls (I dislike 24 exposure rolls as they cost the same to develop as 36s). As it was in a compact camera with no ISO over-ride it was exposed at box speed, whereas if I'd been using a manual camera I'd probably have set the ISO a little lower.

I had a great deal of trouble trying to get correct colour out of this film and ended up just leaving it and accepting the colour for what it is. The film produces very blue/purple photos in general. Grain is very well controlled for a 400-ISO film.

I like Portra 400 or 400H more, but they cost three times more.

Yeah - I've two of them. Luckily they're cheap. This was with the 4k I repaired recently. My favorite one is a much earlier 4 version with an older silver Jupiter-8, knob advance and an actual strap lug on the body. Unfortunately it also has a rampant case of shutter capping. It's fine if I use below 1/125 sec, but that sure removes quite a bit of daylight shots with any significantly wide iris. Oh well.

...a couple of old slides shot by my grandmother on a boating trip with their closest friends, circa 1952 (I'm absolutely guessing). Getting over to the Western forests & water of the state, a reprieve from the Eastern dry and hot of summer was tradition passed down. I'm not sure where they've come in to dock (I believe somewhere in the San Juans), but the other photo is passing through Deception Pass in Puget Sound.

I love these old slides. These are Ektachrome 126. Camera unknown.

Rosinbum Family vacation in Victoria...
I love this photograph. Love it. An old slide from a Rosinbum trip to Victoria. My Grandpa Andy on the right, my dad to the left next to my Aunt Cindy, Grammie Dorie and Aunt Lynn. Whoever took this snap nailed it! I could look at it all day. We're guessing this is around 1968.

I'm also still (as my Dad knows) really, really interested to find out what camera was used for this shot. This one and a huge number of Kodachrome snaps taken by my grandmother and grandfather from back then are just out-of-this-world good looking. This, as they say, could have been taken yesterday...

I stalked her for a while but as she was there with the father I have avoided a direct engagement with the excuse of film photography.

There was also another guy with a Spotmatic and he told me it belonged to his mother but foolishly I didn't shoot him.

Beautiful shot and also a nice place to visit. Amazing how well the old Kodachrome slides hold up over the years and scan so well!

Yeah too bad you two did not chat, would like to hear her story. I always try and engage fellow Pentax shooters, especially if sporting a film camera and...............
