Hmmmm...let me see if I can remember. For the slow speeds:
- For exposures longer than 1/8s, set automatic lenses to manual or use a cable release
- Wind the shutter
- Set shutter on B (T is also supposed to work, but apparently not on my VX1000 for all speeds)
- Fully tension slow/self dial at top right
- Set intended slow speed (1/8s - 12s) on black scale using outer ring
- Release shutter
(For those not familiar with Exakta, yes, that is 12 seconds maximum timed exposure and yes, it is fairly accurate on my two working bodies.)
Self-timer for fast speeds is similar:
- Wind shutter and set desired speed on fast speed dial
- Fully tension slow/self dial at top right
- Select any of the red numbers
- Press shutter button and wait ~12s for the delayed release
Self-timer for (limited) slow speeds:
- For exposures longer than 1/8s, set automatic lenses to manual or use a cable release
- Wind the shutter
- Set shutter on B (T is also supposed to work, but apparently does not on my VX1000)
- Fully tension slow/self dial at top right
- Set intended slow speed (1/4s - 6s) on red scale using outer ring
- Press shutter button and wait ~12s for the delayed release
Are we confused yet? Whether any of the above work properly depends on the health of the shutter and timing clockwork. Warning! Getting out of sequence or attempting with the clockwork other than fully tensioned may result in nothing happening or a shutter jam that might be hard to clear.* FWIW, my older model VX IIa and VX work similarly; one would think that in fifteen years an improved shutter might have been crafted.

* At least that is my memory of things. I don't play loose with the Exakta rules and am loath to test the corner cases.
