Also, if you upload to flickr in at 1024px, 1600px for 2048px sizes in the longest dimension, they will treat you better. That is, they will scale down nicer ( not over compressed as much) than an upload that isn't one of those fixed sizes. At least that's what I'm observing on my computer.
For example, if I sharpen a 1280px image a bit aggressively and upload it, Flickr will only show a fixed 1024px image that will have jagged lines where the original doesn't. But if I upload a 1600px image that was also bit aggressively sharpen, flickr will display various sizes to fit the browser window and they are scaled much better. Again, that's what I'm seeing on my computer.
