Despite Rollei's statements that Nightbird is ISO 640-800 and suitable for low light situations, the last few times I had tried it suggested that that speed rating is massively optimistic. I was definitely metering this at 400 or possibly even 200 and shooting only on extremely sunny days.
Have you tried "Redbird", your results look similar? I also had issues getting any decent shots with that film as well.

I haven't. Was that the one they rated at 50-200?

I've seen some nice shots, but mine always were either really high-contrast red & black with not a lot of tonal variation, or really low contrast with not a lot of detail. (And also without a lot of tonal variation.)

Redbird was rated at 400 ISO, but you could control the effect by exposure.(More to the yellow side than orange) I shot a few rolls back in 2011 and this is an example, not sure if I changed the exposure or not. Never really had any urge to try the film again.

Phil.
It appears to be an effect (like so many others) that could be rather easily replicated in photoshop.

Ah. I suspect that changing the effect is the reason for the rating being a range on Nightbird. On the other hand, this was one of the only shots that could even be discerned as more than an underexposed, grainy blob the one time I actually shot it at 800.

Checking Flickr, it looks like I've tried this 3 times over as many years, with only about 1 "successful" result per roll. Thankfully I paid for just one of those rolls, so the only significant money wasted was on development.

Decided to give Ektar a whirl - lots to play with now. But initial results very promising. So a few to start. Contax S2, Yashica 55mm f2.8 Macro and Zeiss Sonnar 85mm f2.8

With the exception of the image at top (duh), saturation is way over the top either on the scans or in PP. Ektar is capable of handling intense color, but with proper exposure, processing, and scanning should be much less intense, particularly in the "vivid rust" rendering of tan and brown for the dirt, twigs, dry grass/leaves and stream-side rocks.

I usually expect something like...

I can hear an announcer in a bored, monotone voice, "... and for the final act, ladies and gentlemen, the Shetland pony will attempt a defying and daring walk over a log on plywood"
