My latest roll from my c.1947 Kershaw Raven has come back from the lab. I used the whole roll in one session at St Mary's, King's Walden, Hertfordshire. Ilford Delta 400, commercial dev and scan. The scan has been tweaked in Lightroom (mainly straightening up as I find it hard to frame precisely with the Raven). For a simple lens in a 70+ year old folder, I'm pretty pleased with the quality. I need to try a roll of colour film in it now.

Am I alone in finding few things as disheartening as getting a roll of film back from the lab and thinking, "well, that's a load of.... rubbish" [insert expletive of choice here]? This is rapidly followed by: "is there something wrong with the camera's metering? is the new-to-me film stock rubbish? Did I set something wrong? Did the lab screw up?" Followed (in due course when the negs come back from the lab) by a lot of staring at them whilst squinting.

This posting is prompted by downloading the scans from a roll which looks (from the scans anyway) horribly under-exposed. Fiddlesticks.

Yeah I know the feeling! It's like getting a pair of black socks for Xmas when you wanted something better...

No, you're not alone. I frequently experience similar. However, I will say that I tend to discover a couple of gemstones (not necessarily diamonds, mind you, but maybe an amethyst or the occasional blue topaz) upon second inspection of what I've produced after a 'cool down' period of a few days.

What do the negatives look like? Sometimes they may be fine, and it is a scanning error.
It's why I now do all my B&W myself (dev and scan), and the only thing I have labs do is develop colour film.

Don't know yet. I'll have a close look when they come back. Looking at the scans, however, I strongly suspect the negs are poor. These are colour negs on this occasion. It's a lab I have never used before too, so I'll be getting the loupe out for a good close look.

One of the films in my latest Analogue Wonderland wonderbox was Kosmo Foto mono 100. It's quite contrasty and so using it in the snow was probably not the best plan, but it is very low grain. Here are three from the roll shot in the snow last weekend. I used one of my ME Supers and one of K30/2.8, K50/1.2 or an M100/2.8. (This isn't the film I was moaning about above.)
