Luc, sorry to hear of your travails; both personal and photographic. On the bright side, if they were film scans that you lost, you at least have the negatives as a place to start again. Losing the backup must have been brutal - you think you're safe...

Condolences and best to you and yours,
Kevin

P. S. Looking forward to seeing some more shots from your trip when time and circumstances permit.
Thank you very much.
I am now setting-up my system with at least two backups...

I'm truly sorry for you losses. I wish you better days ahead.

You may want to consider finding an old PC, installing a few 1TB hardrives, and installing linux. Then set your machine up for either automatic backups or just keep them on the Linux server. I have a 6 year old pc that I use for this purpose and it's ran 24/7 for that last year without a reboot or a single input from me. A bit of a challenge to setup initially, but after that it takes care of itself, is quiet, uses hardly any power, and just sits under my desk connected to the network; no keyboard, mouse, or monitor. It won't save you from a fire, but it's been pretty bullet proof for me for the last 3-4 years. An added benefit to doing it this way is that any machine on the network that has permission can access the files, including notebooks, phone, Xbox, PS3, TV, etc..

I posted this one on the monochrome landscape thread, but figured this was its real home. The short story is that this is from a roll of film that had been a drawer for at least 8 years. A little extra grain and some fog, but not too bad given the age of the latent image.

(The negative has quite a bit more information in the shadows. I tried doing sort of an HDR thing, but it looked way too fake...)

This might go pass my IT abilities.
For now I have a 64bit box with 3 Hitachi short stroked in RAID0 (to write these big scan files) and two Caviar black for a backup every other day each and a eSata for external weekly backup going to my work office with me.

Cheers,

Luc

Thanks Javier! I was rushing trying to get through a roll quickly, which is just the opposite of what I like to do with film; still, got a couple of good shots. Amazing to think that the camera works despite being 50 years old. My K100d won't be taking pictures this good in 2057!

It is hard to separate out the esthetic value of pictures of one's kids from the affection one feels for them. I don't get out to shoot other subjetcs as much as I would like, though, so I try to pick out the best ones for sharing.

I very much like the photo (not to say the model also) and the composition.

Beware! It is a slippery slope that leads to CBA and FDS. (Camera Body Addiction and Film/Developer Syndrome)

My Yashica Lynx 5000 should be here in a couple of days. Less than $25, so I can rationalize the expense.
