Steve, less a bump in contrast I find, more density I'd say - the whites are white but the overall tone bias is towards the bright.

I took the liberty of doing the following: dup layer, blend in <50% multiply, then add levels layer to bring background to where I wanted... an a bit of mask erasure for the main birch trunk.

Thanks for massaging the image. I don't have PS, but I understand what you did and think that I can probably adjust the scanner to accomplish the same effect. I have noticed that my scanner seems to be a little bright side using the default settings. I will see what I can do with more attention being given to the scan.

Ok...back to the scanner I went. The original I posted here was done using my regular "proof" settings. I set the analog gain down a notch and boosted the light tones and highlights to broaden the overall range.


Yashica Lynx 5000, Rollei Retro 100 @ ISO 180 FG7 1:15

The cracks in the bark look a little harsh, but I like the background a lot better. I am pretty impressed with the on the Lynx's Yashinon 45/1.8 so far. Center sharpness is very good to excellent. I have not seen an optical diagram, but it is supposed to have 6 elements in 4 groups. My only complaint is that it won't focus closer than 2.6 feet. Adequate for portraits, but not much else. I suppose that is typical for rangefinders since parallax is an issue.

These are direct film negative scans. I have yet to find the time to print them in the darkroom (too busy tinkering with the digital camera!)

I really love black & white film photography, but I don't really enjoy processing them. Printing is fun, but processing film, not so much.

Now I have a whole bunch of Arista II 400 rolls here. And since I sold my Canon stuff and acquired Pentax stuff, it seems that it's just logical that I start putting the old K1000 into use!

Pentax LX + Carl Zeiss Distagon 28mm f/2 + Kodak Ektachrome P1600 ( I am never using this film again )

I shot these at the native film speed of 400 but the shop saw 1600 and processed it as such. Maybe that is why it is so grainy. But the P means that it is meant to be pushed to that ISO. The REAL speed of the film is 400 but is DX coded for 1600 but shops don't know the difference. I thought specific instructions to NCPS would be enough, but they STILL processed it at 1600. Oh well. I'll upload more later.
