I did not leave a vote since I could not find my category. My history goes like this:

Film ==> Film + digital

I think this is what K100d meant by "have always used film" =) CMIIW

For me it's digital > Film. Have yet to get through my first roll though buying a more expensive roll to start was probably a mistake =b

I've been using film since 1972.

Before that if you count Kodak Instamatics!

In 1972 Dad gave me his former workhorse 1957 Asahi Pentax. He followed that a while later with a nice early Spotmatic. I used the Spotmatic (and to a lesser degree the AP) right up to about 2005; both now need work, and I've actually purchased replacements. I have another user Asahi AP now... as well as a couple of Spotmatics including a Spotmatic II and a Spotmatic F.

For some time I have also been collecting Pentax bodies from 1957 through Spotmatic F. I have a number of Nikon "Fs" as well. More recently I've added more modern Pentaxes AF bodies and Nikon AF bodies.

I picked up Digital in about 2003 with a Nikon P&S, graduated to Fuji prosumer digital a little later, and arrived at a K10D digital SLR in early 2008.

I love film. I love digital. Both have their places and their virtues. I still regularly shoot both.

woof!

We didn't have film when I started.
I had to coat and process my own glass plates in a darkroom style tent that was in the rear compartment of my horseless carriage.
Dry plate photography was a Godsend.
You guys with roll film don't know how lucky you are.

Canon AE1 -> Canon A60 -> Canon S2 IS -> Pentax K100D -> K20D -> Spotmatic -> K1000 -> MZ-5n / ZX-7

Program Plus, ME Super, Super Program on the way.

I'll figure out which of the older film bodies I want to keep and which I want to ditch. Or maybe I'll keep 'em all. Hard to say with this CBA.

The wording of the post displays a presumption that we were all born after the advent of digital photography. Some of us got into film not out of a conscious choice but rather because at the time photography meant film.

It is sometimes hard to realize what a very sharp change we have had in technology in just the last handful of years and what sort of generational gap is has caused even among relatively young people.

For example: Recently I was telling a story about my younger days to a woman about 30~32 years old. I made mention of making a collect call on the telephone and drew a blank stare. Same when I mentioned dialing and talking to the operator to place a call. She had never even heard of such a thing. I'm 43, by the way.

I have always used film, mostly slides. I have no interest in shooting digital and will quit taking pictures altogether rather than switch. A manual KX
& film is the only way to go!

pardon me asking, but when was this?
i know the leica m3 which is now 55 years old now, was one of the things that made 35mm much more popular and 120 film's been around since the 1900's ...

Nah, you didn't mess up - except the question attracts ALL the film users, who then tell you how long they have used film without a day of interruption
