I got the roll of Ektar back this afternoon and I have to say that I like it alot--the colors are bright, if a bit cool and the grain is pretty smooth. It's hard to say whether or not I like it better than Reala 100 because I was shooting different types of scenes with each type of film (beach for Reala and garden for Ektar). At some point, I definitely want to get another roll of each and test them side by side with the same types of subjects to get a better comparison.

Here are a few of my better shots:

Hi folks....I took the day off and headed to Santa Monica beach. I shot 1 roll of the Kodak 100 Gold and 1 roll of the Ektar 100...I must say that I was impressed with the Ektar. I know many folks have not been happy with it and I confess that the first roll of EKTAR 100 i shot did not come out very well. The first roll came out too grainy as it was underexposed. I had the camera set right, but this film seems to like about 1/2 stop to a full stop over exposed to get a proper looking pic...PP consist of crop and straighten as well as resize...

The processing was done at Target...

The Kodak Gold 100 is not bad either, but clearly on a different playing field. All shots where taken with the M50@F/8

From the Gold I've processed, they always seemed to have a "tinge" to them...somewhat reminiscent of a pushed film.

These shots do back that up, at least in my mind. I've preferred the results of Walgreens and Fuji Superia for "off the shelf, available everywhere" films.

Nice comparison...I'm tired of seeing the same shots over and over in comparisons

Thanks Ryan.
All of the images I took today where snap shots of things I normally shoot.

The only PP done was crop and straighten on a few and that be it. Oh and resize for the web.

thanks for the comparison pics... unfortunately I didn't like either the gold or the ektar ... But if I had to choose I would go with the Ektar only because it renders blue and red better, although the red reminds me of agfa ultra 50, which seems to be "burnt" easily with not much detail and sometimes the ektar has that magenta cast. I will stick to velvia

Thanks so much Javier! The first thing I notice is that Gold makes the women look young, and Ektar makes them look old

Gold seems to have a much higher contrast, the shadows tend to get blocked. The tonal range of Ektar seems longer.

I agree with you. I did notice that the blue's where better and I also did notice the reds seemed to be controlled better.

UPDATE: I am just now looking at these pics on my hi res calibrated monitor and those Reds are crazy bright. Personally, they are too red and need to be desaturated a tad for my taste.

EDIT 2: So far I am not happy with the REDS.
of the Ektar
