Picked up a rather nice looking spotty that seems to be working well, but I'll probably send it in to Eric at some point.

The guy who sold it to me was kind enough to throw another camera in for free!

It's my first Russian camera so I was rather pleased to say the least!

There are obviously a lot of fans of Russian kit, it's often said to be good value for money etc., and I've been semi-tempted to give it a try. But when you juxtapose the elegant Spottie and that Zenit, the latter looks like an ancient, enormous, crudely assembled kluge by comparison (redeemed somewhat by wearing a Tak). Still, for free, who wouldn't say "yes"?! Let us know how it works out; I'm FSU-curious.

The Soviet SLRs are all pretty chunky. The Rangefinders are slightly more elegant.

It may sound corny but the Zenit feels like a very utilitarian tool. The spottie is closer to a jewel!
I ran a roll of neopan 100 thru the Zenit and most of the photos turned out fine, although a number of them appeared to have a light leak near the top of the frame. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the squealing sound that the shutter makes sometimes. The great news is that the selenium meter works just fine! Meanwhile I'm still trying to find an appropriate battery and adapter for the spottie. There is definitely something to be said for metered cameras that don't require batteries!

Here are some samples from the first roll thru the Zenit.

That's just lovely! I do like the removable shoe, the camera looks very sleek when it's off. I just picked up the 28mm 3.5 Tak as well.

I just scored a black Asahi SV for $50. It also has attached a period-correct (I think) Super-Tak 55/1.8, and comes with ever-ready case and strap. Strange thing, I was the only bidder on it. So now I'm thinking maybe I overpayed for it. But I wanted it because of Ringo Starr in "A hard day's night", the one he dropped in water So, what do you think about price? I promise to photograph it as soon as it reaches home.

I think (assuming everything is not infested with fungus) the lens alone is worth the price. Another $70 for a CLA by Eric and you'll have a real gem!! (My SV is silver and my ST55/1.8 is not pristine. I think I paid about $85, plus the CLA).
