In any case your obsevation struck a chord with me. Like so many things in life the wanting of a thing is often more important than the actual having. You've set my mind at ease on the LX score. It might have been nice to have one but I'll just put that dream to rest ...... at least for the moment.

Tom: I've bought, used and sold a number of prime Pentax items just so that I could put some ghosts to rest. Somehow this is different - it is truly a strange circumstance. Nothing like, say, a K200/2.5

I still haven't hit Post on the FS thread though - must be that film advance - so like an SV.

Really interesting observation monochrome.

I used an MX for 20 years or more and like yourself found it too small. However, with the winder added it was a perfect fit for me. Over that 20 years I always wanted an LX. We always want what we don't have right. I had the chance to pick up a good used LX a few years ago. It was in great shape and felt great. The film advance was pefection itself but for some reason I just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. It was probably becuase I shoot so little film these days and it just didn't make any sense as I already have two excellent film cameras in the MX along with a really nice K2.

Very interesting. Parallels my experience with lots of film cameras including the K1000 and Canon AE-1s and F-1s I used to use. Now I feel comfortable with the MZ-S with its auto focus, different shooting modes, and general similarity to modern digital cameras.

True but that K 200/2.5 was pretty special.

Standard for the day, and work as well as they ever did, I would feel naked without mt MX.

Man, I've never been devoted to any brand but since I got this camera I understand why there are pentax fans out there.
The MX feels amazingly comfortable, solid, resistent. everything. If asides from the 50 and the 200 get the chance to buy a 28, then I'm done, my dream setup will be a real thing.

I know these aren't Pentax but what the hey.
Here are my two FSU lovelies. A 1963 FED-3a and a 1974 Zorki-4 with an array of Jupiter Lenses and a Jupiter Turret Finder.

Cross-posted to the gear porn thread. This is my second MZ-5N, currently loaded with some expired Gold 200. The Sigma lens is my new standard zoom for film.

Here is a picture of my most recent purchase. I haven't received them yet but they were listed as "unused since purchased new"

I just love my ME Super

Back from a stroll, she lives there most of the time.

*hearts*

This was the first SLR I owned, If I confess I probably enjoy shooting with a K1000 more so, but only for the nob as apposed to buttons. This is still my favorite, as it was my first :P

New to the system

I'm mostly a Leica shooter (M Monochrom and X Vario) for digital, but decided to get back into film and bought nice 4-lens kits in both Minolta MD and Pentax K mounts. My Pentax kit consists of a pair of MX bodies, 1 chrome and 1 black, and (all SMC Pentax-M) 28/2.8, 50/2 (came on one of the bodies), 50/1.4 and 135/3.5. The MX bodies and M lenses are extremely small in my largish hands, but what is lost in ergonomics is gained in portability. I just got the bodies last week, so this weekend will be my first time shooting Pentax.

What I noticed right away is that the 5 LED meter display is a lot smoother in transition than other LED match systems I've used (Nikon FM, FM2, Leica M6, M Monochrom) and positioning it adjacent to the shutter speed indicator with plus and minus one stop also visible is a stroke of genius. I thought I would prefer a proper match needle system like I grew up on (Minolta SRT200), but I find this faster in use and to provide more information. I am also extremely impressed with the light level of those meter LEDs. They aren't so bright as to wash out my vision or overly distract at night, yet bright enough for daytime use (barely) in bright sun.

The rest of the viewfinder is also something of a revelation. Its downright huge, for one thing, and while my Minolta XD11 is brighter, the MX is pretty close, and much larger with higher magnification. The XD11 is also almost as small as the MX, but somehow its controls feel more spacious.

I've long been a fan of Minolta lenses and the ones I have now (MD 28mm f/2.8, MD 45mm f/2, MD 50mm f/1.4 and MC 135mm f/2.8) are all outstanding. We'll see how well these smaller and lighter Pentax lenses compare in a week or two.

Asiafish,
The XD-11 is relatively small but so is the LX. The MX with a pancake lens is the smallest full info viewfinder manual SLR with the largest viewfinder.

The MX also has user interchangeable screens - unlike the XD-11, so you will have more options there.

The Minolta lenses are quite good, but given the same condition, Pentax M lenses are also quite good.

When you get a chance, post pics of the cameras and from the cameras!

XD11 focusing screens are also interchangeable.
