Well, re-introduction: here's a followup on the K1000 received in the mail a few weeks ago. I decided to pimp it out a little.

Very nice job and very good match for color/texture. I followed the link to Flickr...an old binder cover was the skin "donor"???

Camera arrived yesterday

The Zx-7 joined the family yesterday. I got the body, with the grip, and instruction book.
I was surprised with the speed of the AF system. I usually prefer MF, but had to try it out. I am now reconsidering my preference of manual focus especially with this camera.
I now am waiting to get the film processed now.

Yes - not all that different from standard leatherette, maybe a little thinner, but it feels okay in the hand. It will be interesting to see how well it wears.

Nope...it was the cheap kit lens at the time and a distinct step down from the M 50/1.7 that was not a whole lot more expensive. Your Super-Tak is a much better option.

OH... thanks for that, as I had not taken time to research this thing much. Frankly I don't like its plasticky feel compared to the Taks so was not enamored anyway. Now the 2/50 M will definitely stay stowed away somewhere. I've got not only the Super Tak 1.4/50 but also the SMC Tak 1.8/55, so no need to carry a second-rate 50 even as a backup. I really should do a carefully controlled head-to-head comparison on my 1.4 vs. my 1.8 to see which is sharper. I'm sure that comparison has been done many times in many forums, but I should do it with my own copies since there's always sample variation to account for. Then I should carry the better one whenever I don't absolutely need the 1/2 or 2/3 stop advantage of the 1.4 lens.

Seeing yours and already having a bit of a fascination with using something other than the standard leather(ette), has perked my interest even more. I have given thought to trying a fabric more than once, and I have also given serious thought to using real wood veneers as a possible replacement. I'm really interested in trying the wood, but I'm not really sure where to start. It wouldnt be hard making a pattern from the original leatherette, so I'm sure it's pretty doable. And since I've already done several leather replacements, I feel comfortable about trying, but I'm not sure how different the fitting process would be with wood vs a leather. Are there real wood veneers that are playable and bendable enough for such a task?

A thin veneer may bend enough to go around the sides of the body. You might need to back it with something to give enough depth and possibly to soften out the angle of the bends. I had thought of using something like bamboo (sort of like the flooring, lots of parallel slats), possibly using multiple pieces fit together to go around corners. Veneer can also potentially be fit together in multiple segments to make it around sharp corners.

How about some good Japanese bamboo?

I also got a sample of some naugahyde that would feel great in the hand but might be clumsy to work with because of its thickness. I'll apply that to a parts body sometime and see how it goes.

edit -actually your post made me think of some blinds we once had, something like this:

I can almost imagine it like that, somewhat miniaturized and turned sideways, as a really bizarre covering. But when you mention flooring I'm sure you have something smoother in mind.

Don't forget to factor in sending it to Eric to sort out the sticky mirror problem...

If i were wealthy, I'd totally buy this and carry it around. The Gold LX is vying for "most tasteless thing to come out of Japan", which is a crowded category.

I love it.
