Off Brand / No Name Film

Has anyone tried or use the off-brand film consistantly? What are your results?

I was in the local Shopper's Drug Mart here. In their 'digital' section they had their own brand of 200 and 400 ISO film. I asked the clerk if he knew who made the film and he said Fuji. A 3 pack of Fuji 200 is $12.00, a 3 pack of their 're-badged' Fuji 200 is $9.50 (Cdn $). I just bought a 5 pack of Fuji 200 so I'll wait until I'm done and might try their 200 brand.

So that's what it was!

I bought a pack of 400 ASA Shoppers easypix film to test out a new-old rangefinder. The pictures came out just fine. I don't have any scans at the moment, but trust me, I was pleasantly surprised with the results. Since then, I picked up another couple of packs for general snap shots.

Your message prompted me to check the film canister and voila!, Product of Japan. Must be Fuji. Probably equivalent to the Superia (can't think of anything else).

Great for snapshots. For more "serious" stuff, I still prefer 160C.

It's a surprisingly good film. I tried it and it reminds me of Konica Centuria. But it could also be Fuji Superia (an older version, perhaps?), so the store clerk is probably correct. It is sold under the Shoppers Drug Mart house brand "Easypix" I think.

I now have a freezer full of the Shoppers ISO 400 film. It went on sale for $3.99 for a 3 pack of 24 exposures. So I went to all the nearest Shoppers and cleaned them out.

Here are some sample pics for comparison. The camera used in both cases was a MZ-6. The owl pic was taken using Shoppers ISO 400 film. The pic of my kids was taken using Fuji Superia ISO 400 film. Can you tell the difference?

The Loblaws brand film is supposed to be made by Fuji as well. That's what I've heard that from several difference sources.

Also, in Canada the Black's Photography house brand film is almost certainly made by Fuji, since Fuji bought the Black's chain in the 1990's. I've also tried the Black's film and the results sure looked like Fuji Superia.

Thanks for the examples tranq78, the owl shot is excellent. I'm definately going to try the EasyPix brand once I'm out of my 5 pack of Fuji.

It is not necessarily Superia. Fuji still makes plain old "Fujicolor" that's a tad cheaper than Superia. This is probably what it is.

Store brand films aren't bad - and yes Fuji seems to have a big chunk of the market, though there are Europeand makers out there as well.

I'm not certain these are the same as current films, though perhaps they are like the oldest emulsions Fuji sells under their own names. I've always assumed these are older formulas that have been 'improved' upon since. But Fujicolor is a good guess - I'd be curious what the cheapest Fuji film is in, say the Asian market.

My color film of choice (till I decide to buy a bulk roll of Portra frugalphotographer is offering) is Walgreen's Studio 35.

I used to work there and processed thousands of prints from that brand. Wait till it's on sale...I paid roughly $1/roll in the 4 packs. Get it developed and put on a CD for $5.14 or dev-only for $2.14 (24exp that is).

my experience with off-brand Wal-Mart film has also been rather pleasing!
the gentlemen at the store also claimed it was made by Fuji.

that's a shot i took yesturday using that film, in an Olympus Trip 35, downtown Toronto, processed by Blacks, scanned by yours truly in an Epson V500.

The color film that I miss most is the old 3M stuff that was often sold as house brand stuff back in the early 90's. It had incredible blue tones.

Right now I'm shooting some bulk roll Efke KB 50 that I got just past date at Freestyle for $20 a can. It is some really cool film! I'll post a pic or two when I get something scanned.
