Buying a "not Asahi" Pentax K1000

I'm planning to buy another film camera and I decided to buy the k1000.

I found a really good one in my town, but it does not have the "asahi" logo at top of camera.

Is this a negative point? OR it just "another model" and does not affect the general usage?

That is a Chinese made K1000. The top plate is plastic (I think the bottom plate is as well), as are some of the internal parts. They do not wind as smooth, and they sound just a little different.

Overall, they will work the same as the "Asahi" types, but they are not as desierable.

There are also the Taiwan built cameras, they are all metal (I believe), and can be identified because they say "Asahi", ans have a screw on the top plate to the left of the prism.

The Japanese built K1000's are considered the best. They say "ASAHI OPT. CO. JAPAN" on the back face of the top plate, just under the winder. They also have the screw to the left of the prism, as well as a metal "bump" near the screw. This is a block out to fill the hole where the KX has the battery test button. The KX and the early K1000's shared the top plate.

Great choice for a camera by the way.

Also look into a KM or the KX. They are the two cameras above the K1000. They are the same size and era, but they often sell for less then the K1000 because they lack the cult status.

So, as I found one "not asahi" but in very good conditions with box, manual and case, I think it's not a bad idea to get it, right?

that's alright ... say the lens is worth $20, the camera ends up being $50. if you spend a bit more, i think you can get a better camera.

Does that include shipping?

I have a mint K1000 with an SMC-M 50mm F/2 that you can have for $50 USD + shipping. The camera is in almost new condition. It is part of a kit I bought from my local sheriff department. They bought it and then went digital.

I've had both a metal Asahi logo (made in Hong Kong) and a newer all plastic one. I still have the metal one. The plastic one worked fine but felt significantly cheaper and less durable.

I really think that for 70 you could find a better deal on a metal k1000 or even a better body. Keep an eye on craigslist and ebay.

The "Made in Hong Kong" versions had metal top and bottom plates, unlike the Chinese made ones after the 90's. They are still good buys and you can find a lot of those in slightly better condition than the Japan ones, simply for the fact that I don't believe the Japan ones have been made since the late 70's yet the Hong Kong metal versions could have been sold up until the 90's.
