So I bought an MZ-3 for $3

Yeah. Three dollars for the rare MZ-3. It isn't fully functional, though -- seller says the shutter and mirror are blocked. I'm hoping it's something simple like a dead battery (ha ha,) but it's probably the dreaded broken plastic mirror wheel cog again.

I looked at the document with instructions for MZ series mirror motor replacement someone kindly posted on this forum a while back, and it seems daunting to say the least -- I'm terrible with a soldering iron, for one thing. Probably sending this thing off for repair would cost more than the camera is worth?

But yeah, I really just wanted to say: three dollar MZ-3

Well, that is a bargain even if it is a door stop.

Nice buy!
I got a mint black MZ-3 for about $70. Its my newest camera. My sister had a MZ-5 and I liked it except for the triangular grip thing and then I saw the MZ-3 at my local store and I just grabbed it on impulse. Just took it out the other day. Handles so nicely and it has no extra gizmos I don't need. Just a good and honest camera. Hope you get it fixed! Maybe you can cannibalise a MZ-5n for parts?

If you can't get it fixed, and wanna make a quick profit (let's say, 2000% profit?), please let me know. I got some spare parts, but need an MZ-3 to fit them in

Well, I got it, and it is in beautiful cosmetic condition, no scratches, with the original body cap and everything, but it is about 95% certain that the cog is indeed broken. Not sure what to do with it at this point. I really want to keep it because it is so well built and has some very nice features, but I asked for a quote from a repair shop here in Sweden and he said probably $150-250 to fix it. Don't want to spend that kind of cash since I already have an MZ-6. What to do...

Getting a spare mirror motor is not a problem -- I found where to buy them for $15 or something -- it's just that the repair procedure looks really intricate for someone as clumsy with repairing electronics as I am...

Does Eric do modern Pentax AF/AE cameras as well? I had the impression he only serviced the mechanical models, but I might be wrong on that.

I appreciate the offer, but I would like to exhaust my options re: restoring it to usable condition before passing it on to someone else. I'll let you know if I decide to part with it, but don't hold your breath
