Problems with my new superA

Received my superA a couple of days ago and there seems to be a problem with it.

The shutter speed displayed is always 1000, unless the camera is in bulb or X125.
When set to Manual the shutter speed buttons do nothing.

I've cleaned the contacts on the body with my lens cloth to no avail.

The batteries are almost new. They're only been used in my P30t for a week or 2, and I had no problems.

Any ideas as to where the problem may lie?

Thanks,

Richy

Do you have a film in it?

As I recall, the shutter stays at 1/1000 until the film is advanced to the first frame.

It's at frame 0, wound on and ready for its first shot.

I'll fire off a shot when I get home and see if that helps things.

For whatever reason, the camera refuses at just what you describe until loaded all the way. Throws me periodically, I'm just not used to cameras telling me when I'm loaded or not. As soon as the frame counter's where it wants to be, that'll stop.

This is normal behaviour for this camera until you've wound the film to frame 1.

Thanks guys, that was the problem.
Bit of an odd thing for it to do, but as long as it works I'm happy!

Pentax, at the time they released the Super A, proudly announced, that this feature would speed up film loading, as many people leave their cameras in A or P mode with the lens cap on, while loading film. The camera would expose every single shot during the film advance action for a couple of seconds - therefore this special feature.

Yes, Pentax often came up with seemingly small, but indeed very clever solutions. They just were and are unable to take any marketing advantage of these strokes of genius...
