Year in film - 2009

Here's a chance to post your favorite film shots from 2009 - please keep to 10 maximum... and if possible, show what new things you did during the year (new cameras, lenses, film, you started to develop film... you started to shoot film... etc.)

I think that for many of us the Film SLR section has been an inspiration and an encouragement - so let's see!

Nesster, this is a great idea. Despite 2009 not being quite over yet, and hope continually springing eternal that I'll get "the" shot before Old Father Time issues in another year, I'll play.

1. May, 2009 - Decided that maybe I had missed something by never having shot film seriously (or very much at all). Inspired by <er> Ken Rockwell's film rants and the film SLR forum here, I called my dad to borrow back my ME Super that I had loaned to him fifteen years earlier when the SV he was shooting developed a light leak and some other issues. It had been sitting in my closet, largely unused since 1987.

From the first roll of film I purchased (after finishing the expired roll that dad had started 2 yrs prior - we won't be showing any of those).

ME Super, M50 f2, Fuji 400 (home scanned HP 4370 - yeah, I know...yikes)

Broke the film advance after the last shot and had to have the camera repaired. Took a two-week hiatus from film.

2.Got the ME back and had a happy accident...

ME Super, M50 f2, Kodak Gold 200, home scanned HP4370

3. First film shot where I see a glimmer of hope for me and the medium...

ME Super, M50 f2, Kodak Gold, home scanned HP4370

4. Bought a K1000 from a Radio Tag Sale in June, decided to play with B&W

K1000, M50 f2, Kodak BW400CN, home scanned HP4370

5. Shot my first roll of Tri-X in July...

K1000, M50 f2, Tri-X, lab scan

6. First roll of Fuji Reala 100, lab scan

ME Super, FA50 f1.4, Fuji Reala 100

7. Purchased a ZX-5n from forum member Woof...

ZX-5n, FA35 f2, Fuji Reala, lab scan

8. Thought I'd give Plus-X a shot...

K1000, Vivitar 70-210, Plus-X, lab scan

9. First roll of Ilford 3200 in available darkness in an old railroad tunnel where friends were performing Taverner's Western Wind Mass

ZX-5n, FA50 f1.4, Ilford 3200, manual focus, lab scan

10. ...and only because it's the most recent. Picked up a second K1000 and some lenses last weekend in Southbridge, MA

K1000 (2nd copy), M28 f3.5, Kodak Gold 200

In retrospect, I know these aren't my best film shots of 2009, and I've posted other, better shots on the "show us your film shots" thread, but these mark the more significant steps along the way. If nothing else, they are relevant to my journey in shooting film, and I hope, interesting to look at.

Best to all,
Kevin

Just started shooting and developing black and white film again after doing it as a kid with my dad in the 80's.

1. Chinon CE4, Pentax M 50mm f/1.7, Tri-X

2. Chinon CE4, Pentax M 50mm f/1.7, Tri-X

3. Pentax ME, Pentax M 50mm f/1.7, T-Max 400

4. Minolta Autocord, Fomapan 200

All developed in D-76 1+1 and home scanned on a Canon flatbed.

Looking forward to getting much better at this

Here's two I quite like from this year.

This one was shot in Coney Island with my beloved Pentax 6x7 and the slow but excellent 75mm f/4.5. Film used was the FujiFilm 400H:

The next one was with the ME Super and (probably) the FA 50 f/1.4. You can tell from the pinkish tinge that it was shot using C-41 B&W film (Ilford XP-2):

Cheers,
Tassilo

Tassilo - nice shots - the 400H colors are well displayed in the beach shot.
Foster- Excellent start, the tri-x is classic!
Kevin - again, my faves are the tri-x - #5 is the kind of effect I try for but rarely get. And #4 is a more difficult shot to pull off than seems - those statues are difficult to get exposed right.

Keem them coming!

Big thing this year was selling off almost all my 35mm pentax stuff and getting a Bronica ETRS. Had a big dry spell over the summer.

First roll with 645 50mm lens. FP4+, gossen digisix meter.

Canonet and Tri-X 400.

SMC M 28 f/2 & T-Max 100.

SMC M 28 f/2 & HP5+. Like the backlighting.

645 w/ 50mm lens, FP4+, gossen digisix

645 w/ 50mm lens, Provia 100F, gossen digisix meter

645 w/ 50mm lens, HP5+, gossen digisix meter.

I expected to have mostly B&W, but not so many wide shots! Hmmm.

I'd say this has been a big year for me in terms of photography. I started in digital with my K20D, and ventured down the whole LBA path. Spent a good deal of money on lenses and accessories, too.

For a while I'd been trying to emulate the look of film, once I realized I really didn't care much about absolute realism. When I read Mike Johnston's Leica rants on The Online Photographer, I decided I should at least buy a film body to go along with my digital stuff, just to try. I have barely touched my digital camera since.

I purchased a K1000 and an M 50 1.7 (which I use exclusively- it's a marvelous lens so why switch?). I feel like I've come home, so to speak. Everything's simpler, more about the photos. I love the tactile sensations of film, the poring over negatives and slides, the happy accidents. Nothing is clinical or sterile with film: you could say that, in a metaphorical sense, film is actually more life-like. I like that. I like holding in my hand a physical record of an event that is an actual relic of that event.

Now I'm getting into multiple exposures, and color photography, probably because it's fall and everything is so gorgeous around these parts:

I also got a toy camera (half-frame diana mini):

This winter will be another big step: my wife and I are buying our first house, and my father-in-law has given me a beseler to play with, as well as all of his old darkroom equipment. THAT will be a whole other adventure in itself!

The first three b&w's - excellent photography, each has a compositional element that makes it. Glad you're onto film

like the pictures and concept, but think 10 pictures per each post is going to kill people's computer systems
