The KX instruction manual calls it simply "Aperture-reader window".
Nikon always had better marketing...

LOL!? but yeah i always wondered how it was possible to see the aperture number through that little window!
Well, the lens in the little window is angled down in such a way that whatever aperture number is directly below the window is reflected onto a tiny matte screen in the viewfinder.

(I guess)

The little window has a prism so that the aperture number is reflected to the viewfinder

Well, the one I have in my KX is not doesn't show the aperture selected at all. Totally blank, no bright spot..just blackness. Anyone knows what's up?

Did you try it with a Pentax-brand lens? I'm not sure if lens from other manufacturers have the aperture ring at the "correct" location for the little window to pickup the selected f-stop.

altair, mine was like that when I first got it. It works by a relatively fragile system of lenses and prisms--a good knock will unalign them and make it black. It's really nice to have when it works, though--if you send it to Eric Hendrickson he'll fix it right up.
