miss alignment of exposure compensation

Hi, I have a problem with my Pentax ME super and I would like your advice. I have noticed that when I set the exposure compensation ( 2X, 4X, X/2, X/4) there shall be an indication in the viewfinder to the left at the top. But in order to get this indication I need to turn the compensation ring to an undefined position in between the fixed stops.

I have not been able to understand if it is just the indication in the viewfinder that is wrong or if the exposure compensation also is wrong.

Has anybody had this or similar problem with a ME super, and can you indicate how this can be corrected. I have been offered an attempt to fix the problem at a cost close to 200 $ and I am of course looking for a less expensive solution.

Try exercising the dial a little, move it back and forth a few times.... maybe some of the contacts has developed a thin layer of corrosion

it's free and does not hurt to try
