The FA-J 18-35 is really not a fancy lens. Plastic mount, pretty poor build, and while I haven't pixel peeped it I shouldn't think that it is very sharp at all wide open (and wide open on this lens is only f/4-f/5.6, i.e. much dimmer than the Sigma.) If I had the choice to get either lens free, I'd pick the Sigma any day. The FA-J is just a really good choice if you're looking for a full frame wide angle zoom at a low price -- actually more or less the only option.

Doesn't even really matter though since usually I shoot wide angles stopped down, and when stopped down, the Pentax or Sigma or any-other-lens will be good enough for any reasonable purpose.

Oh, another thing: I can't wait for the resale value of this lens to soar to 5 x the current price after the inevitable Pentax digital full frame comes along Get 'em for $100 while you can, people...
Yeah, poo-poo the FA J 18-35 all you want, but it is one thing: Light. Amazingly light.

I should have those photographs posted by suppahtime.

Color film samples from FA J 18-35. All the ones posted here are at 18mm, shot with Pentax PZ-1 in Autofocus-Single.

this was in 2006 shot with my PZ-1 and the FA-J 18-35. Settings unknown.

SHot is in Zyon Canyon Utah.

Given this is almost directly in to the sun, the lack of flair is pretty impressive.

I used this lens, which came as the kit lens on my *istD mostly on the PZ-1 to get wide enough for the shots I wanted.

Scanned with a minolta Dimage II scanner, 2880 DPI 8 bit color. Shot probably on kodak Gold 100 or 200 ISO

I love the FAJ 18-35

This is probably the best bargain of a lens out there. It may be the real reason I switched from Nikon to Pentax. I lusted after superwides and couldn't afford any of the Nikon options.

There are really only two frustrations with the FAJ 18-35. It's slow, and it lacks an aperture ring.

It's quite sharp (OK, a little blurred right in the corners.) And it has an amazing lack of distortion.

I have very recently replaced my FAJ with a Sigma 15-30 EX DG, which gives me an even wider view on fullframe film, and gives me an aperture ring. I'm looking forward to using an ultrawide on my MX.

In the samples I've given, I show one of the things I like to do with the 18-35... shoot for the crop or use the panorama mode (available on the MZ-7 and the PZ1p.)

Thanks for all the pics and responses everyone. Once I sell some gear I will most likely get this lens.

Just pulled the trigger on a NIB 13-35. Hope it's a good one.
