In my experience a good pocketable viewfinder camera
(rangefinder, scale focus, or AF) is often more practical.

I have an Oly XA and XA2 for the really light traveling with film.

That's probably true, which is why I was investigating micro43. I just got a DA40mm from this forum, and with the DS on lithium batteries, it should come to about 750g or so. With a MZ6, it should take about 100g?

True.
on my last overseas trip I used my Sigma DP1 for ~99% of time. (ooop it is not film.)

My traveling kit will probably be the MZ6/ZX-L, the K-x and a collection of very compact primes. You don't have to have all of them around your neck or on your shoulder at once.

For comparison, the MZ6 weighs about 380 grams without lens. A classic pocket camera, such as the Rollei 35 weighs 325 grams. Even with the 90g lens, you are talking about adding only 145 grams to carry the much more versatile SLR and the 40mm lens. With the MZ6, that includes a flash. The bulk would be a bit more, but a waistpack or a neck strap would do that job.

For me it's all about bulk. I usually prefer nothing around my neck, shoulder or waist.
At 270g I consider my Contax T too heavy for a chest pocket, except in a heavy coat.
Fortunately there are a number of really good pocket 35's that weigh far less.

If you can find a film *ist, that is one tiny camera, but full function. The only downside is that it does not support M or K series lenses. Paired with a DA 40 it is fantastic.

That is a nice little camera. The crippled K mount is the only thing that kept me from being interested in that body.

Yeah, that's frustrating. Maybe getting rid of the coupler was the only means they can get the cam down to 335g...

It's US$235 at KEH, which definitely doesn't fit the "cheap" category though.

Thanks very much guys. It sounds like the MZ-6 is what I'm looking for.

Cheers!
Try getting the AA battery grip it adds a bit of weight but a lot of stability

Either the MZ-6 or 7 will do the trick
I have the 7 and it works fine as well

That sort of accessory kills it as a travel camera, though. The battery grip is the first thing that stays home if I want to travel anything close to "light."

(Re: *ist) Yeah, but I have other bodies on which I can use my manual focus lenses. And I was astonished at how small and light one is. Of course, I often use it with its grip, which does work against the small size.

I would agree, if you have other bodies, but back to the original subject of the thread, this is about a lightweight body for traveling, and multiple bodies for multiple lenses. would seem to defeat the purpose. For my upcoming trip, I am planning on taking a K-x plus one film body (so I can use my M20). That already seems a bit off the mark for light traveling.
