Tamron SP 300 , f2.8 & Teleconverter AF X1.7 ?

Which model should I get of this lens ? Does any one use this combination? How its performance on Tamron SP 300, f2.8? especially its exist of CA?

I looked at what I think was a model 60B and tried it with my K10D and SMC 1.7x AF TC.

My impression is that CA was much much worse than with my SMC300 F4 and the same AF TC so I did not buy the tamron.

I've used the older Tamron adaptall 300/2.8 (60B, I think) with the 1.7 AFA. the lens has PF a lot. I only took it for one 3 hour shooting before selling it, and I think the PF got worse with the 1.7 AFA. However, the PF doesn't bother me, I can easily remove it in PP. But, the AFA adapter with the PK-A adaptall mount, works very well, and if I recall correctly will transmit the corrected focal length and aperture to the body. I would highly recommend this combo. however, I preferred the sigma 100-300 overall.

Did you mean the Sigma 100-300 w TC?

I hardly think to choose lens which can reach more than fl 300, but my budget is limited.
There are 3 option that I consider to choose,

1. Sigma 100-300, f4 w adapter TC x1.4
2. Sigma 50-500, f4
3. Tamron 300, f2.8 plus Pentax TC x1.7 ( I got best offer for the lens, plus already have TC x1.7)
4. Pentax DA 300 plus TC (no AF TC availabe right now)

So, I like to hear other option.

I have had a Tamron 60B for a year or so and have used it with success with the Pentax 1.7AF adapter and also with the matched Tamron 1.4 adapter.

I have just acquired a Pentax K20D and have never tried the Tamron 300 with it. I'll make some test shots tomorrow and post some samples.

I had the 360b and 1.7x afa and it is very good stopped down a bit to control pf the 1.7x adds the 1.5 f stops to the camera and on mine f 10 - f13 was the ticket It works better with the adaptall TC but no AF. here is one with 1.7x at f11 I think.

Here is one with the adaptall 1.4x at f4 showing a little pf in OOF areas you can desaturate the purple if it is bad. I kind of regret selling mine.

If you can have the Tamron 300/2.8 for a good price and think you are good in manula focus, then the 2.8 at 300 is unbeatable. You see severe PF at 100%, I could hardle see them shrunken to LCD size. Even at 100% I was able to remove them without much traces of it being there at all. So, that is a non-issue.

Remember, if you can get it for a good price and don't like it, you can always sell it here without much loss. It is a very very nice lens. The big part of it's attraction is the f2.8, and as i couldn't get the focus right, I kept my sigma 100-300 F4, but other than PF, I cannot say a single bad thing about it. It could be tad sharper than the sigma.

In the 3 hours I got one image that made into PPG.

as I posted earlier, an older non HSM Sigma 70-200 plus the 1.4 and 2x TCs works well.
So does the SMC 300F4 plus the 1.7 x AF TC

here is te proof.
Note as earlier posted the tamron 60B is much worse for PF than the SMC300 F4 and with the newer bodies like the K20, K7 and Kx, high resolution high ISO is not an issue

SMC 300 F4 first shot hand held at 1/40th is a 100% crop out of my K7

this is with my *istD and flash at 1/150th of a second (300 F4 and 1.7x)

sigma APO 70-200F2.8 EX (non dg, non macro) with sigma 2x TC first with flash second jpeg right out of the camera, neither is cropped just re-sized to post

The SMC 300 F4 is the mother of chromatic aberrations (CA)! If there would be a textbook about it this lens would be the example. As you can see in Lowells 1st example picture the fore- and background lights up like a rainbow. It also causes a wired color shift which makes images appear washed out. Its advantages are, though, that it is relatively cheap and the part in focus is sharp and shows only little fringing.

But since you asked about the 300/2.8. There are 3 versions, they are described at adaptall-2.com. The latest (rarest?) one is black not green.
I only handled that lens but never took pictures with it. Be aware it is really heavy.

I never said the 300 F4 was perfect, and the CA seen is easily corrected, but the 300 F2.8 (model 60B) is much worse, I have tried it and got totally turned off by the CA, and the difference in soeed just does not justify the expendature
