Huh? Pentax isn't in last in defects or in volume of purchases. The least popular is Tokina and the most defective is Sigma.

The problem with a survey like this is that only the people who have stumbled across it vote. I wonder how many people consider a lens "defective" just because it didn't live up to their expectations. I guess I'm fortunate in that I have never bought a lens, new or used so far that was broken or defective in some way. Some are certainly better than others and a $100 lens will not be as good a quality as a $500 lens but that isn't a defect.

How true. I still try to come to terms with my FA31LTD that does not live up to my expectations. It might be the photographer (I'm just a happy snapper), it might be the camera (K10D has focusing issue, K100D might not have the resolution) or it might be that I have the false expectation that I can see each leaf with perfect detail in a lemon tree at 8 meters distance.

I have one OOF shot with the K10D that actually shows what the FA31LTD is capable of (and of course all these beautiful pictures on the net).

Last night when I posted Pentax were at 89% so its going up a little which is good news. I realise people normally only vote on things like this when they have a problem but anything that makes Pentax look bad is not good imo.

There have been a lot more votes on Sigma,Tokina and Tamron as well.

Probably 90% of the Pentax people voting bought a 16-50mm anyway

I don't remember exactly how old some of my lenses are, but the oldest in my current collection is from 1999/1. I have bought, owned or come across DA14 (x2), FA*24, FA31 (x2), FA43, FA77 (x3), FA100/2.8, FA135 (x2), FA*200/2.8 (x4), DA10-17, DA16-45, DA18-55. Among these, DA14 (x1), FA31 (x1), FA77 (x2), FA100, FA135 (x2), FA*200 (x3) were physically defective (not counting AF or optical defect). Hard to believe really.

Of the 4 Canon lenses I bought 2 years ago, EF-S10-22, EF-S17-55 & EF-70-200/4L IS (x2), all of them were really in brand new dust free condition (rather rare with Pentax lenses). The 1st EF70-200 had FF at 70mm though.

That's quite amazing ... I have about 8 Pentax lenses atm (and have had a lot more in the past) with not one problem. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough or maybe thats why my pictures always look so bad

I think you have a point. Of those lenses, if I were to just use them instead of "inspecting" their physical conditions, they were mostly fine (and perhaps where Pentax QC stands). However, I think tight QC was what set the Japanese products apart in the 80/90s before they moved their manufacturing offshore. The irony is that as poorly designed and built Sigma lenses were, they were all in the same brand new condition as the Canon products that I have owned. Now I am not bashing Pentax, but "brand new" does mean something. Otherwise, they might just repackage open box or refurbished and sold as brand new (sometimes the condition of their brand new lenses made me wonder too).

Ever since I got a K20D with its per-lens sensor bf/ff adjustment, I seem to have fewer "defective" lenses... hmmmm. Coincidence?

Voted.

Only defective-on-purchase lenses I've had were Sigmas.
