Pentax FA* 250-600mm Gov't surplus
Posted By: thorswolf, 09-07-2011, 06:09 PM

The Canadian Government's surplus site (Crown Assets) has posted a FA* 250-600mm f/5.6 lens for sale. Being in the region, I went to take a look today. The lens is in great condition, a few dings on the finish (normal) but the glass is pristine. Comes with case, filters, cover, etc. It is complete. The rather cute RCMP officer who showed it to me said it was 2 years old (I can;t vouch for this). I tried the lens and the clarity was excellent. Link below. Inside the case was a Pentax Forums printout from the lens database so they could "evaluate the value".

Right next to this drool fest lens is something that is going up in the next few days: an A* 1200mm f/8.

A few caveats:
I believe you have to be a Canadian citizen to be able to buy. Not sure about that. You may want to look further into it, or lean on a Canuck buddy for this one.
There is NO SHIPPING INCLUDED. It's pick-up only, so you have to make your own arrangements.
It's closed bidding so you place your bid and hope it's the highest.

This is legit, folks. I have bought quite a few things from there, including camera gear, musical instruments, jewelry, etc.

What's for Sale - CADC

Follow the link and type "Pentax" in the search field.

If I am not successful with my bid for that lens, I'll bid on Marc Langille's for $500.00 !!
I already called Dibbs on Marc's lenses!

Why no shipping? IMO, there'd be a better turnout for an online auction with shipping.

Actually it's a government site so they do whatever the heck they want. That doesn't sound like any other government I know though...

Here's those shots I promised. The two top pics show the only damage I could see. The glass seemed flawless. The bottom two shots are taken with the lens. First is about 75 yards, second about 125 yards. Both are full 600mm wide open and hand-held (1/250 and 1/125 respectively). Resized for the forum (natch).

Heh, someone else has already noticed: SMC Pentax-FA 250-600MM - FM Forums

They think this lens will go unnoticed and not sell for much.. yeah whatever.

Edit: Oh, and they want to strap it on a Nikon??!!
They mention one was on sale a year or so ago on this forum for 2300. That sounds really hard to believe. I searched the archives and only found one sale of this lens listed around threetimes that much.. .

If the Canadian govt. is getting rid of these I wonder what they are using now? Friend has the 250-600 and it cost over 5k used. My banker is glad I am not living in Canada right now.

thanks

All I can say is that my daughter's college fund has been saved by my nationality.

I have exhaustive complete collections of all Neil young, Joni Mitchell, and The Band record albums--that must make me at least 51% Canadian.

Gonna put on Acadian driftwood right now...

Does anyone know if they'll hit you with sales tax on this? Seeing how it's the government, I can't imagine they'd let it slide.

Oh yeah! I'm VERY sure they'll hit you with HST. Always a nasty surprise.

I'd read the fine print or call them if you're interested and can meet the local pickup requirement(or have a custodian to pick it up). For a lens that comes up maybe twice in a decade, best to call to verify any requirement. My brief search turned up nothing on this point. No requirement to be a Tom Cochrane fan either.
