Pentax FA* 250-600mm Gov't surplus
Posted By: thorswolf, 09-07-2011, 06:09 PM

The Canadian Government's surplus site (Crown Assets) has posted a FA* 250-600mm f/5.6 lens for sale. Being in the region, I went to take a look today. The lens is in great condition, a few dings on the finish (normal) but the glass is pristine. Comes with case, filters, cover, etc. It is complete. The rather cute RCMP officer who showed it to me said it was 2 years old (I can;t vouch for this). I tried the lens and the clarity was excellent. Link below. Inside the case was a Pentax Forums printout from the lens database so they could "evaluate the value".

Right next to this drool fest lens is something that is going up in the next few days: an A* 1200mm f/8.

A few caveats:
I believe you have to be a Canadian citizen to be able to buy. Not sure about that. You may want to look further into it, or lean on a Canuck buddy for this one.
There is NO SHIPPING INCLUDED. It's pick-up only, so you have to make your own arrangements.
It's closed bidding so you place your bid and hope it's the highest.

This is legit, folks. I have bought quite a few things from there, including camera gear, musical instruments, jewelry, etc.

What's for Sale - CADC

Follow the link and type "Pentax" in the search field.

I think I'm seeing things, did they just relist the lens or is this another one?
That's the 1200mm mentioned as an upcoming sale earlier in this thread. It should also go for some serious money.

Wow is right. I thought I'd put a good bid in... I guess Clinton REALLY wanted it.

Not hardly. I put out a bid that had I won at that amount, I'd have been happy without the FA* 600/4

I was pretty sure that $5500 was what was needed to win it. Someone had big pockets on this one.

I'd missed the running bids on here.
I had bid $5,046 and was obviously short by more than $2K.

I believe that puts me in second place... which is just another way of saying "first among the losers".

The winning bidder might have a surprise when they show up and have to pay a grand total of $8,079.50 with taxes...

Yeah 13%... the joys of the Harmonized Sales Tax in Ontario: 7% to the province + 6% to the feds = 13%
No they don't mention the tax. Since it was originally bought by a Gov't agency, it's a fair bet that no tax was paid at that time, and we all know that someone HAS to pay the taxman somewhere down the line.

Since we haven't heard from the first place bidder, I suspect they aren't a forum member, and hence, @Thorswolf, I've got my fingers crossed that the first place bidder will fall through and you'll get an offer to buy the lens.

Mike, you're right and I'm wrong. It's a trend today, I've had to write that a few times already.
Clinton: Yes and no. Yes it would be great to have, but it is also a hell of a hit on the back account.

The price paid seems to be in the middle of the range of the two user reviews on this forum. Adding in the vagaries of Canadian-US exchange rates, couldn't this price be considered "market correct"?
