TWO SMC Pentax-A 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF Camera Lenses

Two of these up on ebay at the moment, one seems to have, what can be best decribed as an "optimistic" price.

I think both are very optimistic considering we recently had two sellers offering this lens at a much cheaper price and in better condition than the cheaper one.

That said, it is a brilliant lens, I think, an easy match (or likely better) than the current Sigma 300/2.8 EX. Though of course you lose AF and gain weight and bulk.

I think $1600-2000 is a reasonable price for this lens depending on the condition and what's included.

Agree with Daniel on the price - less so on the Sigma comparison - I have both and did an extensive comparison and apart from a slightly more Pentax feeling with the colours of the Pentax I could not tell a difference in sharpness - but a hell of a lot in weight... I paid about 1,500€ for mint condition recently.

Sharpness is excellent on the Sigma, I agree. But it doesn't seem to have as good an object-background separation though unlike yourself I've never compared them directly. If you have examples to post for comparison, that would be very interesting.

Agreed , I must say I'm loving my Sigma 300/2.8 EX DG, Picked it up for just a tad over 1,500€ brand new just recently. colours are great, not as "3D" as my FA*200/2.8 but still, very sharp, and good saturation. Pleasant bokeh, esp with leaves in backgrounds, sharp vivid colours, might have to step up to a K-5 with this one.

I took quite a lot of shots of boring subjects like piles of firewood and though I wanted the Pentax to come out better... no chance of telling the two apart. However, I sometimes have the feeling that in real life shots the Pentax does have a better - for my taste - colour rendering. But this is really a luxury problem. I might post some of the shots in another forum as I haven't got round to a donation here and have used up my quota though there are photos in the 300+ thread taken with both contenders. Surprisingly my most used field-lens is an adapted 400/5.6 645 these days, bitingly sharp wide open and very portable at just over 1kg. Examples also in the above-mentioned thread.
