*whistles*

and there i was sitting quietly and thinking to myself, you've got a manual 60-300 coming, no need to go and bid on something else... *shakes head*

little did I know I was just an ignorant LBA'er.

For better or worse, it was extremely unlikely that it was going to sell under a grand. The Pentax mount version of that lens is hard to find and there isn't really anything equivalent to it available. The "real" bidding on eBay takes place in the last 10 seconds of an auction when the sniping programs kick it; before that the current price of the item is somewhat irrelevant as a lot of bids have been placed, but not on ebay Of the 100 or so auctions I've won over the past couple years, I've never placed a bid before the 5 second mark (though they're set days ahead of time, and can be changed/canceled up until 3 minutes before the auction ends).

I just wish the Nikon version was worth that much. I have a like-new, in box copy of the 100-300/4 that will probably only sell for $650-700 when I get around to listing it

Sorry Bossa, if it was somebody here on PF we may here from them. Looks like it was the original bidder who put the very first bid on that won the lens, so I think they were out to win no matter what. It was actually the same lens in the notice a few posts down, https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-price-watch/168390-sigma-100-300-4-aus.html
that had been on Gumtree since 16th of Nov for 1200.00. As with most of these on ebay, there is always someone sitting back with a sniper bid ready to spoil your day. And as Dgaies said, the real bidding doesn't normally start till the closing hours, 1225.00 is not a bad price.

Dgaies, I've seen the Nikon and Canon ones pass in on fleabay actions down here, last one was a Nikon mount with a 2x converter with it, starting bid 600.00, not one bid. A Sony mount went for 365.00!!!!!

Yeah, often there's a huge difference in the used market (for the same lens) when you're talking about Pentax mount version compared to the other mounts. Lenses like the Sigma 100-300/4 and 180/3.5 macro often sell for 50-100% more in Pentax mount.

For someone really interested in something like a 100-300/4 or a 180/3.5, it almost becomes cost effective to buy the Nikon mount version and pick up a used D300/D90 for about the same cost compared to buying the Pentax version

If I wasn't considering the 60-250 then I would have bid up to 1200 but no more. I also know where there's a brand new Nikon one at a shop and they want $1695 for it. But I've also read a few mixed reviews on the lens and was a tad wary, I suppose, and in the end it was probably more the clutch manual focus and no HSM that put me off bidding any further. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression there in my 1st response.

I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't have bought another brand camera for my 2nd body really, as much as I like the K-5.

I almost very nearly did exactly that, was 1 second away from buying that Nikon mount one with the 2x and then get a second hand Nikon body, but I really wanted to stay with just the one system, then I completely lost my mind and bought the 300/2.8, oh LBA leave me alone will you....

I've been toying with buying either a canon or nikon dslr if they get cheap enough. just so i can use all the wrong lens mounts i bought... *looks at yashica kiron lens*

but then if i do that, LBA could just spiral out of control......

$1695! Ouch. Kidding aside, if you want a Sigma 100-300/4, the one I have is in EX+ condition and you can have it for less than half that price, including shipping That should leave you plenty of extra money for a used D300 to go with it

That's another advantage of the 100-300/4 in the Nikon mount; it has HSM and full-time-manual focusing without a switch/clutch. The Sigma 1.4x works pretty well with it too, giving you a somewhat inexpensive 140-420/5.6 setup.

So far I've been able to control my LBA enough to stay away from 300/2.8 lenses. I wasn't so fortunate in my ability to stick with one system

Thanks for the offer Dan but I am trying to be strong.

I have only recently got over a severe case of G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) re' musical gear and was then immediately struck down with LBA madness. My photography isn't really all that good so I've already spent too much.
