And someone who's not been watching the new roadmap release, I'd say.

Not so sure about that, there's No 300mm F2.8 on that roadmap, and still massive speculation as to what the 550??? will be. I don't doubt that the Glass will be fine glass but its still a long way off , and would expect an equally large price tag as its focal length, somewhere in the $5000.00s I would expect. So someone getting a 300/2.8 for 2000.00 is a bargain. And, means it will complement a 500 when it eventually is released.

Bidder was non paying, so I've grabbed it (as I checked it out last week and it's like new condition). The final thing that pushed me over the edge was a K20D for sale near me, and being in Melbourne for work when the GP is on this year, pick it up in a week. However now in longer lenses I have Sigma's 70-200/2.8, 100-300/4 and 300/2.8.....which seems excessive to me.

On the Pentax 560/5.6. As Cmohr has said, $5000+ is a more realistic price, I don't have the cash or need for that (600/5.6 via TC is fine by me). And most events here don't allow in anything over 300mm through the gate (300/2.8 + TCs seems like a good compromise ).

Ahhh, Nice work, I thought It might have been you Sean, It is a nice bit of kit to actually hold in your hands isn't it. It will be fantastic for the GP. I was almost thinking of heading down for it myself. I used to go to the Indy up here, and found my 200/2.8 was just either too short or too long, a 300 would be perfect, then just pop on a TC to reach upto the next corner.

I actually didn't even watch the auction as I was expecting 0 bidders again, then I was gonna swing by and grab it (seller couldn't pull the auction off early)....but got an email saying the bidder was false and it was mine if I wanted it. I must say it's smaller than I was expecting, but heavier! Did the old 'nearly drop it on the ground' trick, as I was expecting it to be lighter haha.

The only thing i'm dreading is 3.5 odd kg of camera and lens, and not being allowed to take a monopod...

Thats what gaurd rails are for.........

I was taking pics hand held the other week, with the 2x Tc , late afternoon, and despite a bit of a grey/blue cast worked rather well, considering the sun was going down, and it was over cast anyway, with sprinkling rain, and I was shooting into the sun. Theres a pic in the 300mm thread I took the other day of an egret taking off.

You shouldn't have too many problems during the day with good sun. stop back to around 4.5 - 5.6 to increase DoF and run up the ISO a little to compensate. I have changed the ISO stepping in my K-7 to ev step, that means it goes, 160-200-320-400, 500, 640, 800, give better latitude than 100-200-400-800.
