The seller thinks it is broken because it doesn't have objectives near the mount.

This sounds normal for a long tele, I think.

I think the seller is justified in thinking it's missing some glass. How many lenses go from aperture mechanism to film plane with no glass in between? (aside from Lensbabies and pinholes...)

Nikkor AF-S 300/4 is one, but I have no idea if is an exception or if there are a few others like that in the line-up.

This teleconverter is not compatible with the SMC Pentax-DA* 300mm F4 digital telephoto lens.
