FA* 400mm for $2839
Posted By: Clinton, 09-25-2012, 06:45 AM

Pentax-FA* 400mm F/5.6 ED(IF) SMC & IF For PK Mount Lens W/Hood+Box | eBay

Seems a bit expensive to me, but I've seen these listed almost as little as the FA* 200/4 macro.

I've seen them less than the FA*200/4 macro. What did the FA400f5.6 originally cost?

Anyone has experience with this lens? How is the IQ and handling?

I remember back in February or March, there was one listed here in the Marketplace for $2200 I think - it was sold within an hour........$2840 plus $68 shipping is a bit on the high side for this one especially for the condition, but they seldom are seen for sale.

I have heard from another former Pentax shooter that it's very lightweight, quite compact, and very pleasing to use, but that the quality in some situations isn't quite what you might expect from the FA* series. This shooter specifically mentioned some ghosting in high contrast situations, but he wasn't sure if it was the lens or the body or what.

I've never had any need to pick up this lens, especially at the prices it fetches. *shrug*

On the flip side, if you compared it to say the sigma Bigma, or the DA* 300 with a 1.4x TC, I expect you'd find the results stunning. *shrug*

Is the FA 400 / 5.6 that much better than a A 400 /5.6 seems your paying $2000+ for Auto Focus . This is getting close to A 400/2.8 prices .

I find the A 400/5.6 a good lens and a good value, but I'd love to try the FA 400/5.6 to compare. Not so much for the AF, as for the smaller size and lighter weight, shorter MFD, and possibly reduced CA from the ED element. But I don't see this as an attractive price.

Since the DA* 300 is not compatible with the Pentax-A 1.4x L converter, I guess so.

This price is nuts. A brand new Canon 400mm f/5.6 is $1,300 with warranty. That leaves $1,500 left over to buy a pretty decent body to go on the back like... I don't know... maybe a brand new 7D or a 5DII.

As I recall it was selling new for about $1400 back when it came out--just after the turn of the century I think. Very few copies sold...probably less than the FA*200 macro which I bought about that same time for about that price. I think the 400 was only on the market for a couple years, the 200 macro for about 3 or 4 years. Part of the death knell for the 400 was a very poor review by Popular Photography listing the lens as quite soft. I'm guessing the pop photo tests didn't dampen vibration enough?

I know a guy here in Helena with one...he likes it.

SOLD (!)

UVP (MSRP) in Germany 2004 (years of production):

FA* 200/2.8 ED [IF] 1497 (1993-2004)
FA* 300/4.5 ED [IF] 1147 (1991-2004)
FA* 200/4 Macro ED 1497 (2000-2004)
FA* 400/5.6 ED [IF] 1697 (1997-2004)

It is not unusual that both the 200/4 and the 400/5.6 sell used well above their original MSRP prices.
Today 1697 are about 2200$.

It really would be interesting to know, how many 200/4 and 400/5.6 were manufactured.

BTW: 200/4: 4th from left, 400/5.6: 2nd from right in the picture below .

My thoughts as well. Plus getting good service if needed instead of no service at all. When the FA400's used were getting about $1700usd, that's about what I paid for a new 400mm f5.6 L and a 40d refurb.
