K-01 for $346 at Adorama - NEW
Posted By: Adam, 11-01-2012, 09:36 AM

The price of the K-01 just dropped by $200. Wow!

Pentax K-01 Digital Camera Body, Black 15222 ($346.95)

With the 40mm it's $446.95:

Pentax K-01 Digital Camera with Pentax 40mm F/2.8 XS Lens - Black 15242

Edit: this is an authorized Pentax deal, and B&H is now showing it as well:

Oh wait - you said 'right mind.' Pass
I thought everyone agreed that "right mind" excluded the K-01 as well...

Given that it turns overcast every time I take my (black) K-01 outdoors (I've read the manual twice, and can't find a way to turn that feature off), does anyone know if the yellow bumblebee will make it sunny?

That's a feature, it's so you can see the LCD better. You don't want that pesky sun impeding your ability to chimp, do you?

That's what I thought, too, but with all the interrnet reviewers insisting that the K-01 was useless and a personal insult to them, their children, and possibly grandchildren, because it lacked a viewfinder and the LCD panel (that they had never actually seen in person) wouldn't work in bright sunlight, I thought it was just me.

At this price, the tables are turned- you can't get the same image quality for anywhere near this price from other brands!

Adam, any thoughts on whether this is Ricoh-Pentax clearing the table for the next model, or just giving up on the experiment (at least for the time being?)

When the K-01 failed to really take off, I thought that it had potential to become a cult camera at closeout prices. It sounds like those days have arrived.

At Photokina they sort of implied that the K-01 didn't do as well as they had expected. It could be that the issue lies in its design, rather than the mirrorless k concept, though.

I was ready to purchase the Q for a candid project that I'm doing, where the smaller size of the Q would be much more ideal as carrying my K-30 isn't the most appropriate for some situations.
But now... a K01 body for the same price? Hmm... sure it'll be larger, but better resolution and the ability to use my K-mount lenses...
I'll have to sleep on this tonight and compare how much smaller this K01 will be from my K30.

Either way, both the Q and K01 are at very good prices.

Who in their right mind would buy the Q now?
I just did, the two-lens kit. Won't claim to be in my right mind, though. Tiny cameras are fun, and I'd like to try it out as an ultra-tele with a K-mount adapter. (Macro too.)

I'm interested in the white body version. The mode dials are black on this model, so can anyone confirm that these too are made from aluminum?

They are, yes.

It's a lot smaller, not just in dimensions, but also in design, if that makes sense. The lack of a flash housing bulging out over the lens and no dSLR-style grip makes it feel smaller. Not Q- small, by a long shot, but the K-01 can fit in a jacket pocket with the 40mm or a small M lens, and that's something my K-x could never could do. I'm not trying to sell you either way, but except for its obvious differences, the K-01 shares a lot of features and behavior with the K-30.

Thanks Adam. Ordered with the 40mm lens. God, I'm turning into a camera junkie.

BestBuy is now matching the price on the body-only and the K-01 + 40XS. Adorama's bundle is still the best deal IMHO.

At these prices I think the good decision is to buy both
