K-5 now only $799 at Adorama - ALL-TIME LOW!
Posted By: Adam, 11-05-2012, 12:17 AM

Pentax K5 K-5 Digital SLR Camera Body, Black 14748

They keep on doing better and better! How compelling is this for those of you that are still shooting with K10's and 20's?

VERY. I stopped pondering II vs IIs a few days ago when the minimum differential hit $375. Now I'm pondering whether I can squeeze the budget a little to pull the trigger on the K-5 this week.

Slick deal Adam, thanks for sharing. I can't imagine it'll go lower than this...although I said the same thing back in the spring when I picked one up for $899.

This price is crazy low- and every day it's getting harder to believe that it originally cost me $1750 plus tax...

I'm starting to think that Pentax's new marketing strategy is to make their cameras cheap in order to suck people in, and then they'll have no choice but to pay the higher lens prices. The only flaw with this is that people can just as easily jump ship due to the small size of their initial investment...

Hmmh, once they've added a few lenses, the investment won't be as small anymore.

The flaws I see are:
  • there is excellent and affordable third-party glass (it makes more sense to shoot Sigma with a Pentax than it does with a Canon, AFAIC).
  • Pentaxians know what the real value of Pentax lenses is; they know the old prices. Unless Pentax comes up with something that really adds value, why would anyone pay inflated prices?

To me I feel it's like the sale for K5 isn't moving lately, they are trying to clear the stock?

Anyway, for $800 it's really a steal, but don't think they can sell many even at this low price.

This is bad for those who want to upgrade to K5II/K5IIs, really hard to sell K5 second hand for a good price now. Some friend here in Singapore just sold his seldom used K5 plus a Tamron 28-75/2.8 (still under warranty) for around $650USD!

Just pulled the trigger on the K5 from Amazon. $789 with a little credit card discount.
Should be here monday.

My biggest single reason for getting it over my K20 is the superior ISO performance. I hope I'm right.

Maybe. But if WR is wanted Sigma has nothing.

A friend and colleague of mine, who has been away from photography since film days, just bought one at this price after giving mine a try. It will be nice to have a Pentaxian in my immediate circle of acquaintances.

I'm not so sure. When your principal competitor is a cell phone, you need to look at what cellphones sell for and consider the
value added. When someone gets around to make a cell phone with a "k mount" on the back of it., where are we? Or perhaps more likely a "Q" mount. the change from chemical to digital imaging was an incredibly disruptive technological change (just ask the unemployed chemical engineers in Rochester). I am not yet convinced that a new stability is at hand.

The tough part about this, is for anyone in the market place trying to sell their used K5. So, they spent $1200 or $1500 or $1800 on their K5...and now a new one is 799? In order to make buying a used K5 attractive enough for, say, me to purchase it rather than a new one with an intact warranty....that used K5 better be at *least* $200 lower than the new price. At least.

My heart goes out to ya, used K5 sellers...but I'll take your K5 off your hands
