Note that this is the DA L version, no quick-shift focus, no lens hood, plastic mount.

Not so good buy then. Oh, well, sorry about that.

No, it's a pretty descent buy and its now $199. Recall that we have no reports of the mount breaking, its the same optical formula, and a hood is like $12.

It's been a great lens for me and I paid considerably more for it last year when I picked up my copy. I wish I could have picked up mine for that amount.

Thanks Doc. I'm looking for a decent zoom too. Thought about this one, then found something else I'd rather have and just thought this was a good buy for 55-300mm. Thanks for confirming it isn't a bad deal.

The only thing I'd miss is quick-shift, but the competition doesn't have that feature either (Tamron and Sigma 70-300's)

Dan,
I upgraded my 18-55 for the WR and like that it has QS too, but I wouldn't pay another $100+- for it on the 55-300.

You also get a metal mount and hood. Do you have a 55-300? They tend to hunt a lot. I use QS on this lens more than any other.

As I said, there are no reports of a mount failure in the DAL series. Metal is nice but modern plastics are amazing. Hoods are $12. I don't find my 55-300 hunting very much when it's used in adequate light - it's not an f2.8 after all.

My Pentax 18-55mm non WR is the DA L ll and has a metal mount. I don't own a lens with a plastic mount. I'm assuming it's better plastic than one would think when saying "plastic."

Just FYI there is no DAL II, the DAL is the one with plastic. If it has a metal mount than its either a DA18-55 or a DA18-55v.II. Plastics are amazing things - from the cheap throw away forks that break when you look at them cross-eyed to tough polymers that can withstand punishment that steel would crumple under.

You're right doc, there is no L on my lens. It just says DA Pentax 18-55mm ll. I never really read what was on it, I just assumed it had the "L" on there. Looking at it just now, I realize I've been saying it all wrong.

No big deal. When you talk about it though you do have a more expensive version that some respect more. Me, I got the II, the DAL, and the WR and compared their IQ - no difference I could see. So, I kept the WR and sold the other two. Now I have two WR lenses - the 18-55 and the 18-135.

I'd like to have the 18-135mm myself but since my camera isn't WR it defeats the purpose of having a WR lens.
