I don't question the capability, take a look at my signature. My point was that there are so many posts on this forum questioning the viability of a $7,000 Pentax lens. When I check the prices of Nikon and Canon long glass I have to assume that a new Pentax 250-600 would have to be at least $10,000 and that it would be criticized for its unattainability. But perhaps you're right that it would be a halo product that would attract new customers who would have to spend that much money anyway to Canon or Nikon.

But you would be getting a proven performer, unequaled by any other zoom and comparable to the best primes. That is something to save and to strive to acquire. With Pentax's great ISO performance - what a system for sports, wildlife - we'd see Nikon and Canon users looking to switch.

These things combined with a lack of photo leaves me concerned:

On Mar-09-13 at 17:21:41 PST, seller added the following information:
I am told by an interested bidder that there is a special tripod base thing that screws onto the tripod ring on the lens. this piece did not come with the lens.

I am sure that the lens is still a usable fantastic lens and it can be attached to a tripod in a different way.. ...... again this lens is sold as is., as described
On Mar-10-13 at 08:52:57 PDT, seller added the following information:
once again.... the tripod mount arm bracket that screws onto the tripod ring of this lens is MISSING. it doesnt come with this lens. you will have to find one or make one..

Its getting to be a pretty scary sale for sight unseen.

One went for over $7,000 last year in a Government sale in Canada. If you can get a tripod mount made for $500 you're braking even.

Damn, I can't believe I missed this one.

I agree with you 100%. This seller, apparently not knowing squat, bought this lens at an estate sale and thought he/she could make a killing. First he/she stated the tripod mount was in good shape, now claims it's missing. Plus it's missing the case. If I were considering buying this lens, the seller would have to either offer a refund plus free return shipping if there were something wrong with the lens, like scratches or else I would have to see the lens in person. Another avenue could be if the seller had the lens appraised by a reputable camera store.

At least for me, that's a lot of money to take a chance with.

It seems the seller has withdrawn without selling, he is described as a camera repair set-up, so he should know the whereabouts of this lens. What also concerned me was the description of the front glass as very good and only a no scratches for the back element. A little short on info for such a beast, still, I am hankering for one!

After failing to sell, looks like the seller has relisted it for a bin of $3600. If you could get a foot made, this would be a no brainer, however I couldn't get the seller to send me an image of the foot so I could determine if one could be made.

As an information for the buyer: The "tripod mount arm bracket"s of the FA* 600 and the FA* 250-600 might be compatible (and probably still available from Pentax Japan):

I'm dubious that they are still being made, or available from Pentax JP, but if they are, this buyer got a reasonably good deal with some associated risk.

FA* 250-600mm

Im happy that it seems everyone missed the piece of an FA*250-600mmon Ebay some weeks ago

Clinton, you seem to know, may i ask (or enyone else). Is it the same on Fa* 600 and 250-600mm that the front "filter" is a part of the construction and therefor must be attached on the lens to work properly? I also read somewhere that the rear filter also must be in use, cause of the optics construction? Is this correct? I cant find any difference in my pictures if i use them or not.

I didn't missed it. Was it the one for sale in Australia which seemed to have been used a lot?
