High end used glass in W. Canada in a bricks & mortar store
Posted By: tranq78, 03-31-2013, 06:18 PM

Some nice high end used Pentax glass from a very reputable camera store in Western Canada. FA*28-70/f2.8, A*300/f2.8 and Sigma 50-500. Prices are $1,100, $2,200 and $1,500 respectively. All in CAD$. I've purchased from this store before and they are excellent with a full warranty on used equipment sales.

See here.

Used, Classic and Rare Vintage Digital Cameras, SLR, Lenses, and Photography Equipment - Canada, Edmonton, McBain Camera Ltd.

When I checked with the store a while ago they were still available.

How the FA*28-70/f2.8 is compared to Tamron 24-70 f/2.8?

McBain is fantastic.

Those lenses have been there for 2 months. I bought the FA 43 that came in with them.
I also bought, but returned the FA*80-200 they brought it as it was defective. They offered to send the lens away for repair... At my expense. That would have erased the value I paid. So I returned it, expecting them to send it away for repair on their dime. Nope, they just threw it back on the shelf for the next guy to buy (who then promptly returned it for the same reason). But it was taken off their list a couple weeks ago, so someone must be happy with a lens that won't focus.

Edit: McBain Camera really is a good place, I just had a bad experience with one guy (it is a much longer story). But I still frequent their other stores.

Does not sound fantastic to me.

1). They put used merchandise up for sale without the simplest check
2). They return that item to the sales shelf after the first customer complains.
3). They return that item to the sales shelf AGAIN after another customer returns it.

There is a basic level of trust between seller and buyer, the item works unless a problem is disclosed. That was violated two or three times.

I've always been on the lookout for stores that sell used equipment. I will avoid this one.

They have several shops; I would say this issue was only related to that one shop, rather that one guy. I have had nothing but good purchases and good experiences with the rest of McBain shops/staff. I link it to this person being very anti-Pentax, even trying to sell me another system when I inquired about DA* stock.

Every other used lens I bought from that specific store has been fantastic and yes, came with a warranty that was never used

I did also see the FA43 for sale.

I bought the FA*80-200/f2.8 sight unseen with a warning that autofocus did not work and could not be repaired. So I was fairly and fully warned beforehand that it was a manual focus lens only. I live in a different city from where the lens was, so I couldn't examine it in person.

When I received the FA*80-200 I discovered there was nothing wrong. It works fine. All that happened is that the AF/MF clutch was pushed to the manual focus setting. To make the autofocus work I simply pulled the clutch to "autofocus". I also checked out the powerzoom function and it works perfectly as well. It is optically and mechanically perfect.

What likely happened was another salesman did check the gear when it was traded in, but subsequently a different salesman who didn't know the Pentax system incorrectly thought there was a problem.

So I wouldn't be too hard on the company here. Mistakes happen and the store is very reputable.

Does it focus to infinity? That was the problem I had with it. I also bought it sight unseen and had it shipped to me. Tried it out in a different McBain store and powerzoom worked (My K-r doesn't support PZ). But no matter what I tried (had it for a week) it would not focus to infinity until about 100-130mm (if I remember correctly). After 100-130mm, it worked just fine. The manager of the Red Deer McBain and I played around with the lens for 15 minutes when I returned it to him. The lens just would not focus to infinity when below ~130mm, in AF or in MF. The focus ring would feel "gritty" and catch on "something" when trying to do infinity, without ever reaching infinity.

Got my money back, but they wouldn't deal on a DA*

Yes it focuses to infinity on the short end, in both auto & manual focus. I just tried it at 80 & 100mm.
