We have one a block from the clinic and we deal with them regularly. They get a lot of leftovers from estates of deceased folks. My bet is that someone saw that the camera was a film camera, the battery was dead, and they just put it in the box with other stuff.

Would some of the family try to keep them instead of giving away?
Or do you think some of them are out of reach from their family?

In an ideal world, this lens should go for about 75% of its real market value. But like the K f/1.2 on ebay the other day, all these untested, condition-unknown lenses are going for what a fully tested and accurately described one should go for.

I will probably put a sufficiently low bid on it (even though I want an even earlier model with the logo engraved in the front cap), but I can see it ending in the $500-550 area. If it doesn't hit $500, I'll be surprised...and in that case, I may also be the next owner

I believe this is the earliest version with the logo printed on the front cap and a brown leather case.
The later version (MIJ) and current version (AIV) has the logo engraved on the cap

It's now $341 for the kit. I bet that the people at Goodwill are like, "WTF? It's a film camera!" LOL
