If you meant for a manual lens, I would agree. for an AF lens, it shouldn't have been an limiting factor, otherwise it should be an issue of poor lens design. as far as I know, sigma AF 50 1.4 has good sharpness at wide open, and not hard to achieve that.
The AF is fine on the DA*, even if it's not the fastest. It's more that the DoF @f1.4 is rather thin, and not everyone understand how to master it, or how to take advantage of it.

I've used the Sigma 50 1.4, the FA 1.4 and 1.7, and the DA*55. I think the Sigma is super sharp wide open. It is the sharpest of the lot, then the FA 1.7 and DA 55 are super close, and the FA is last. I've had all of them, and I preferred the FA 1.4 over the Sigma 50 1.4 due to the rendering, and the Sigma is too sharp (I know that sounds crazy). The DA*55 though is in a whole league of its own with rendering. I do portrait photography and it led me to the DA*55 to be far better than the rest. Each other one has its strengths (the FA 1.4 looks awesome at 2.0 and 2.2).

Very informative comparison! Thanks

Da 50mm1.8 lowering price

I have several 50's already. Definitely getting the new DA35mm 2.4 new for about $181.
It will be a better wide angle for shooting living room family shots in my narrow living room.
I also plan to shot a lot with it outdoors. I think the 35 is a great addition to the line and nice
and affordable, with great reviews. Freddy

They still are, if you bundle them with a DSLR

The 50mm 1.8 is back up to $246.95 on Adorama, but is still $181.95 at B&H.

It could be that only B&H is authorized to run the rebate longer. Adorama will always match their price, however, as that's their policy.

They are both fine companies and you are safe with either one of them.

Oh I know, I just remembered specifically reading Adorama's website saying the offer was valid until October 30, just like B&H's website still states. But maybe I am wrong. I am, however, saving a screen grab of the B&H website in case they change the price sooner. I intend to buy this lens next month.

50 vs 35

Obviously the focal distances and apertures are different, but is there any general consensus on which of the two has better image quality between the 50 and 35 2.4? I hear so much about the 35 'plastic fantastic' and not much at all about the 50 1.8. I prefer the 35 2.4 but am trying to get my hands on a 17-50 2.8 first, then deciding on if there is any reason for me to pick up the 35 (I like that focal length better than 50, but if the 50 is better, I'd be willing to look at that too).

Which lens did you buy and in what way(s) do you feel it is not 'in the same league as the limiteds' ??
