Pentax-A 100mm /2.8 on the Bay
Posted By: keyofnight, 08-08-2013, 04:14 AM

There's a Pentax-A 100mm /2.8 on the bay right now for 666.66 obo. The price is pretty high compared to the average price you see in the lens review database. I got mine from a guy trying to get rid of his ME Super outfit quickly, so I got it for less than I expected to pay ($150~). It looks like all of the other folks in the review database did too: $50 on Craigslist, $25 from a pawnshop, etc. Even still I read it has a reputation as a stellar portrait lens (which is why I bought it in the first place).

Sowhat is the going rate for such a lens? I'm sure $666 is too much and too evil , but what is it worth to people?

The A 135 and the A 100 are not in the same category. I had the M 100 2.8 and it was much better than the 135. I found it to be much better than the overrated, but beautiful 85 f/2. I almost bought that A 100 2.8 that had fungus. Mine had a little bit and it was still contrasty and sharp. This lens is made to be shot wide open.
Well, how much would you pay for an A100mm/2.8 in, say, "very good" condition? Also, would you say the M100mm/2.8 and the A100mm/2.8 have the same optical formula?

How much would I pay for an A 100 2.8 in very good condition? Probably not more than $180. Reason being: While the K mount is crippled on the DSLRs, I only shot it wide open. I do portraits, so to me, A 100 = M 100.

Aurele: Some have said that essentially it is like the 50 1.7 in its color portrayal, but is like the 50 1.4 in its smoothness.

Key of Night: I will post a pic or two to demonstrate what I mean. This one is straight out of the camera no editing wide open.

I sold an EX+ M100/2.8 w/ Hood & Caps here about six months ago. It languished for weeks at $189 all-in. I finally accepted a lower offer. I paid $229 for a K105/2.8 (which is somewhat warmer but no sharper than the M) same condition and accessories. $500 for the contacts on the A!00 seems like a lot of money.

Huh? If it is an 'A', then it is not crippled on DSLRs -- works same as it ever did. (Unless you take it off 'A' setting.)

Anyway, on the original subject, although they don't come up that often the A100/2.8 generally sells in the $220-$280 range in good condition. $500+ is crazy...

Fully aware of the difference between the A and M. I'm saying that I only shot it wide open so whether it was an A or M it didn't matter to me.

I love both my FA77 & A100. My 100 is slightly sharper. I'm still learning what I can do with the 77, and the keeper rate is not as high yet as the 100. If I could only keep one, it would be a tough choice. But that might change as I use the 77 more. It does seem strange to see the 100 advertised for more than an A* 300 in excellent condition.

I don't see as many "interesting" lenses for sale on the 'bay or the forum as when I purchased my first digital, the K20D, back when it was the top of the line.

It might be that these nice lenses are going for a premium on the hope that a full frame mount is released this year. And the devaluation of the dollar as the US Gov't continues to print money might be a factor. But the amount I take home after taxes so I can feed my LBA sure isn't going up!

The lens was relisted for $499. Still pretty steep.
