Pentax 35mm for $150 and 50mm for $120. Other lenses too.
Posted By: lenshoarder, 08-13-2013, 11:28 AM

Pentax is having a sale on lenses. There are a few on sale but these two seem pretty good. The 35mm is $150 and the 50mm is half off at $120.

Guess I'm one of a few, perhaps, who paid with cash via PayPal.
Don't see how they can charge me more, but still wondering if they will honor the deal.

It's crazy to me that the sale price on the 50 was still up this morning, but the 35 is back to normal.
Who's on first?

... just got off the phone. The rep was VERY apologetic, didn't know why the price had defaulted to the $249. She assured me that it was simply a hold, not a charge, and will be reversed within one-two business days, that when the lens ships I'll be charged the $119+shipping, $129 total! So HOLY COW, what a great price. Or in reality, though, it's not actually a great price but a price more in line with Canikon's "kit" 50mm 1.8. But YEAH!
That is a different story than they told me yesterday. I ordered the DA 50 at 4:16pm yesterday and then read the posts in this thread. Thinking that something fishy was going on so I called at 4:30pm and talked to a customer service rep. I was told that the lens is only available at the $119.95 price if you buy a camera at the same time. She said that all the orders are on hold and they will be sending cancellation notices out in the next day.

So I just got this email while typing this message...it will be interesting to see if anyone else gets the same message?

Dear Customer:

I have emailed them for an explanation. I haven't received the reply yet but somehow I think I'm going to receive the same email as yours.

I paid with Paypal as well because they can't come back and charge you more without your authorization (supposedly).

I for one will be surprised if they ship these. The website still shows the same price on the 50 and shows "in stock", but my order states "all backordered". It also states that lens has quick-shift when it does not, and the website also claims "ships in 1 day", and that is obviously a lie as well.
After being on the losing end of the last Overstock fiasco on the K5II kit deal, I know that Customer Service Reps don't have a clue what is going to happen until they are told by the Managers, so when the decision is sent down from the crystal palace at Ricoh, we will all know. Until then, everything said by Customer Service should be taken with a grain of salt.

I noticed the DA SMC 35mm F2.4 AL is A$194 on the Pentax Australia site - https://www.crkennedy.com.au/pentax/index.php?q=catalog/22

That's US$176. Is that a good price?

The DA 50 isn't listed at all.

I don't know. I expected to have to throw a walleyed hissy fit but I only explained the situation in a calm rational manner, she put me on hold for a few minutes, then she returned an apologized and said I would only be charged $119. It's still listed as that price this morning. Here's my take: I ordered, I talked to a rep AND got a name, that's on the record, the rep said pentax would charge me only $119. That's on record too. So even if it is on back order, I've got a paper trail verifying my price, so when push comes to shove, I can argue the hell out of that price being honored.

I'm hoping it doesn't come to that, but I ain't selling my A 50 1.7 till this one shows up on my door. I'll keep y'all posted.

By the way, does Pentax still make any money per lens at this price? Is the profit simply zero? Or do they make an actual loss?

A general rule of thumb from Manufacture to retail merchant is about 4x. That is 100% mark up from factory to retailer, and another 100% from retailer to consumer. This is grossly over simplified, and does not count any overhead costs.

This is not below the manufacturing costs, and I imagine pretty close to wholesale. I think we can expect the items to ship, and I would not listen to any customer service rep they don't have any power and probably read you a script.

I did call them and was told it was an error and that all of the orders for "those" lenses were being cancelled.

I want to have something in black and white, as my record, just in case they dispute anything later.

I just got off of the phone with customer service. She said, "any order placed on 8/13 would be honored. Any order placed after 8/13 would be cancelled".

Sadly, I ordered mine on 8/14.

What kind of BS is that?
I also ordered yesterday, the 14th.

This thread makes me very sad about the state of Pentax's official webstore's customer service. If they really can't honor some purchases and are cancelling them, why still have the webpage up that makes it possible to order at the $120 price? Ridiculous and completely unprofessional.
