A* 400mm f2.8

Pentax A 400mm F 2 8 Ed If Lens EX 0027075002111 | eBay

Seems like a reasonable price and the lens looks to be in very good shape. The only gamble would be if there is no forthcoming FF to hang it on.

I hang mine on a k5. If there was a FF I would use both formats depending on the reach I am looking for in a particular application.

And it would be great if you could get a unicorn to schlep it around for you.

Wow.. a monster lens for sure. Did you mean "hang K-5 on it" vs "it on K-5"? .

That is of course quite correct! At a certain point you "attach a camera to a lens" rather than "attach a lens to a camera". I just had that lesson with my DIL last week as I was teaching her to use my A 400 f/5.6 which is not anywhere near the size of this monster but still requires a different set of reflexes when attaching.

Any A-400 5.6 user is going to say, hey it's awesome, someone give it to me for Christmas.

My question is, why would I want to schlep one of these around instead of an A 400/5.6 if I'm going to be shooting at F/8 anyway?

That's a valid question. The obvious answer is IQ but in practical terms, if schlepping is involved, it's not worth the effort. I can imagine it would be great to have as a more or less permanent fixture at a rustic retreat (but I don't have a rustic retreat.)

Playing nicer with a teleconverter? Other than that and the better focusing/brighter viewfinder I can't think why at f8 you would care.

IF you put a 1.4 L TC on it you have a 560 / 4 or 2xL you have a 800 / 5.6 this lens is very usable at 2.8 and its only 6000 kg if you compare that to an FA 600 /4 at 6800kg so its usable . compare that with the A 1200 at 8500kg its a light weight , the only down side is that it has no handle to hold it with , if your going to a limited area its ok on a mono pod , we have used it on a Pentax outing with no trouble , but its no hiking lens , I do agree with Dave if you could set it up some where and just change TC for different FL it the best option a blind would be perfect , if you really want one you need to plan to use it or it will just sit in the cupboard but they don't come round to often,
