K-3 / K-5 II / K-50: Don't forget the extended warranty!
Posted By: Adam, 10-09-2013, 12:00 PM

If you live in the US, you can get a 2-year warranty extension on any new camera purchase with the warranty card below ($19):

Pentax 2-Year Extended Warranty for Pentax and Ricoh 85716 B&H
Pentax 2 Year Extended Warranty for all current Pentax DSLR, Compact and Q Cameras. (Total Warranty 3 years - 1 Year Standard + 2 Years Additional)

This warranty is valid for all Pentax and Ricoh cameras (DSLRs and compacts).

The warranty card must be purchased at the same time as the camera to be valid. This card must be purchased within 30 days of receiving the camera and is valid even if you purchased the camera from a different retailer in the US. If it's back-ordered that the time of purchase, that's OK- the original invoice date is all that matters. (updated Jan 2015)

And when should this be purchased relative to "buying" the new K3? I placed an order through the Pentax store a few days ago. But I won't actually HAVE it for a few weeks.

I imagine the pre orders aren't actually charged until the camera ships, so the ship date will technically be your "date of purchase". Or more technically, the date on the receipt/credit card statement.

Right, and I'm sure Pentax won't mind if it's within 30 days of your getting the camera.

I'm gonna order one now, just in case. Pentax charged my card already and I don't want to hear that I waited too long if I wait until it arrives. I don't think anyone could claim I bought it too early!

Good idea. I have not ordered anything from the Pentax webstore, I thought they would not charge until they actually shipped the item.

I didn't order this when I preordered my K3 from B&H. What's the best way to add this to the order?

You don't have to "add it." Just buy it now and keep your receipts.

BTW, I know it seems weird for this to be out-of-stock or back-ordered, but it happens sometimes. I guess they just run out of the little cards they send you. You can still buy it when they're back-ordered though.

Good call and one more reason I should buy a K3 so I can send my K30 in for the included cleaning and tune up....

There are a few states where add on warranties are not valid due to local consumer protection laws.
Sorry, write your congress/senator/representative.

"
Pentax Ricoh will provide, at no charge, one complete check-up at any time during the warranty period. This includes inspection of all camera functions to see that they meet factory specifications"

Does a check up in the first year before the 2-year extension kicks in count against this? Or, is this just for when year 2 kicks in after the initial 1-year warranty is up?

ĀFAIK it will count, as the standard warranty does not include a checkup and cleaning.
